I think if you are having a hospital birth, then the classes are not really necessary. If you are trying a natural birth, then you have to take classes.

and it is true: husbands become overwhelmed and are not much help during labor. We went to 12 birthing classes and Justin forgot everything the moment my water broke  If I had to do it all over again, I would get a Doula or a good friend that you know is knowledgeable and on the same page with you about the type of birth you want

@ chnst: Well my oldest sister was like Ben, and my other sister (they have 2 year age gap) was the easiest baby ever. She was just like feed me and lemme sleep... Maybe Ben's sibling will be like that??? I mean you never know, but that story was supposed to get your hopes up! ;)

thank you Anna&Evi. Exactly what I needed to hear! :star: I think we created a monster with Ben.... He is the cutest little boy but he is driving us crazy. He was moping around in bed all night trying to sleep (he does try) but he just isn't tired.

oh well, I really have to catch up here but I got to go to orietation for my winter semester.

have a good weekend!

Does he drink juice or have anything sweet during the day? When my mom was watching Eman, he was a terrible sleeper. I asked her if he was having juice or, gasp, soda while there. She said he was having apple juice so I had her water it down. Also, I have siblings living with her who eat junk so I am sure he was partaking in all of the sugary treats. Needless to say I begged them to stop giving it to him because I was going nuts from lack of sleep. He is so much better now.

chnst: What's MIL feeding him? .... But apart from nutrition, some kids just are terrible sleepers. My parents followed the baby book down to the letters with my oldest sister, but she just was a tough baby/toddler.

@ Raven: It is a hard situation, I really don't know what I would do. In my experience the US is actually quite children friendly (like when you move around with a baby and shopping cart, people usually are helpful and keep doors open etc), but there are just no laws protecting the working mother. Maternity leave is completely up to the employer. But some states have laws to protect a pumping mom, which is good. I was quite shocked in the beginning too, cause in Germany you get up to 3 years. The first year you get a lot of money, up to 75% (there is a cutoff though) of your salary, the next two years it is less, but the employer has to take you back after 3 years. It is debatable whether that destroys jobs or employers or if it stops employers from hiring women in childbearing age (all has happened), but the middle way at least would be nice.

Anecdotal, but my employer in the Bay Area wanted me back, they offered part-time and working from home, with appearing like twice a week for a short time there, but then DH started the Air Force and we moved. But at least his salary is sufficient for us and we even bought a house. I hate the military sometimes, but the security of the job and excellent pay (half is taxfree) is, well, a compromise I can live with.

pics or it isn't true :P

Hehe, I wont be taking pic of my belly, it's just feels weird lol.

@Anya: You are about to be fascinated and amazed at how far your body can stretch…and what a perfect, miraculous thing it is because it can grow a little person

Thanks Caro, I couldnt imagine, really.. I'm always afraid of pregnant people (the belly) it looks like it can pop at any moment and I's always afraid to touch it.. and I couldnt believe mine will be able to strectch that much.. it's scary looking :)

Anyway, I woke up in the middle of the night last night with a very cold belly.. it felt freezing cold I had to put my hands there for quite sometime until it warmed up. I dont know what's up with my belly being so cold like that. my midwife said she've never heard of anything like that but told me not to worry. May be I should not sleep on my back anymore :crying:

And I just found out that my work only gave me 6 weeks paid maternity leave but I can use my sick and annual leave up to 3 months (and they have this donate leave if I dont have enough leaves to last until complete 3 months).. not the best deal but at least they tried. I love my work though :star:

Wow, 3 years! That would be sweet, eh? But I can see the argument for discriminating moms because employers don't want to bear that responsibility.

A woman's gotta do what a woman's gotta do for the family. :-)

I would LOVE it if I can work part-time/work from home. That could be something I can propose to the new employer instead of do an outright 1-yr mat-leave.

@ Raven - Just out of curiosity, where in Van are you? Hubby used to live in Burnaby. I love visiting. We used to go every year at American Tgiving, but couldn't afford to this year. Hopefully, we will go in the summer.

I live in East Vancouver, a couple blocks from central Burnaby. If you do come and visit, give me a holler!--we can go for coffee. :-)

Don't watch those shows.... They just either scare you or give you false impressions of birth! I sort of didn't acknowledge birth til my water broke... I didn't want to spend my time being scared... I kept telling myself that women have been doing this for eons and I'll be fine. It sure was no walk in the park, but doable. I did hope and pray for my natural birth and I did get it, but I was prepared to accept an emergency csection as well, I mean I knew that I might get my ideal birth or that also I might need some medical intervention, if necessary.

And... most likely you won't remember much. I certainly don't. It is all fuzzy as if I was really drunk. I think nature erases the memories on purpose so we do it again ;)

There are some episodes of those shows though that are really beautiful births, those are the ones at the Birthing Center. No yelling nurses, no ice chip sucking (a laboring woman should be eating and drinking as she pleases!) - but calm and loving environments. Soooo nice. Nobody yelled at my birth cause I forbid it, hehehe. That would have driven me nuts.

I'm leaning towards water birth. Still have to do some research on it.

Thanks for the comforting words, Anna.

So here I am, just finishing up my greek veggie wrap with feta cheese for lunch and surfing the net for pregnancy info when I came across a list of what NOT to eat when you're pregnant.

  • Raw fish - Darn! I LOVE sushi. OK, no biggie.
  • Raw eggs (no runny eggs) - D'oh! I just had one of those for breakfast last weekend!
  • Unpasteurized soft cheese - D'OH! I just ate feta cheese!
  • Caffeine (especially during the first trimester) - Arggh! I nursed my cold yesterday with hot chai tea!

I'm already making mistakes!
