nessa, i 2nd the desitin, we use burts bees and its amazing. Im 100% for a bathtub. It made my life so much easier and that way the baby isnt slipping and sliding everywhere. we used zaids tub from 3 days old up until not too long ago. Obviously now he is a big boy and takes baths in the regular bathtub. Make sure you get a tub that comes with the sling on it. It was nice to give zaid his first few spongebaths until his cord fell off and also much easier to bath him when he was a little little baby.

I love the diaper disposal bags for poopy diapers. they have a scent and that way you just tie it up and stick it in the trash and your house wont smell like poop. We never used a diaper genie so i just bought a normal trash can and put it in zaids closet. Then i put the poops in the disposal bags and was able to just throw them right in the trash. works great for us and i only have to take the trash out once a week.

pacis, well sadly many people will probably buy you tons, even if u dont register for that specific kind. i know i got tons of avent pacis and didnt even ask for them. zaid never took a paci unless i held it into his mouth when his colic was at its worst. and even then he would only take the NUK brand. Now im grateful he never took to it, but he is a finger sucker, so i dont know which is worse.

you will find that no matter what advice is given every baby is so different and what works for you may not be what works for another. Every day is a lesson learned lol. we bought so many things that just ended up being packed away and never used, and im sure many others have done the same.

wanted to say I cannot BELIEVE you are already 32 weeks!! seems like just yesterday you and charles were spilling the beans here on VJ !!! good luck in your last few weeks of being pregnant!!

We bought a temporal artery thermometer instead; our ped uses it, the hospitals use it too. It's gentle and can't cause harm. We picked it up for $23 at Costco.

Anna, I love the temporal artery thermometer!!! It is awesome for babies and adults, too!

Ooops, I agree with Anna. If the covers are for the cloth daipers, you will need probably a good 4 in the beginning. Allie has about 4 covers now and I ordered three more. Adam lives on two covers but he also uses All in ONe diapers which do not require a cover and his poo is not runny anymore so we hardly soil them now.

Oh about the pacis. It - again - depends on the baby. ADam had one about 5 hours after birth. He was so fussy without one and slept as soon as he got one to suck on. BUT he also was a great nurser. He didn't have nipple confusion so I didn't worry about the early paci. Allie just won't take one, she prefers her thumb.

Nessa,

I imagine that you might still be given a ton of stuff from friends, family and co-workers--I would just buy the absolute essentials or things you for sure will need right away.

To eliminate items from your list, you might check and find out what health stuff your hospital will send home with you. Our hospital gave us a thermometer, bulb syringe (for baby's nose), a pacifier (a soothie), some diapers, etc.

Some other random notes:

I love Lanisoh breast ointment, but have yet to use even 1/2 of the first tube that I bought (you only need a little each time). It's super helpful when first breastfeeding, and then when/if your nipples ever get sore again. I would only buy one tube of it.

I have never used breast milk bags. I got a lot of medela bottles and use those for storage--pump directly into them, put on the top, then store in the fridge or freezer. By the way, the Gerber BPA-free bottles (very cheap at Target) can be used interchangeably with the medela.

For the nursery: I do not use a crib pad (I bought several)--the mattress itself is waterproof, so it doesn't need one. And so far I've never had a wet or soiled sheet using disposable diapers (he occasionally poops in his onesies and sleeper).

Are you sure you want a movement detector? I think that would make me paranoid. I don't even use the baby monitor any more--our house is small enough that I can hear him if he cries. I would probably use it during naps if I was outside (like in the summer).

You probably have enough blankets--you can probably skip the receiving blankets--people WILL give you those.

The healthcare kits are usually full of items you have already listed. I bought the items separately. Be sure to get a nail clipper (Safety 1st makes a good one).

Oh, and what is Gum cleaner?

Have fun--baby shopping is great but expensive!

ETA: I'm not sure how the nail clipper got bolded in the text above--I guess it's an important point!

thanks everybody.

@carolyn, u imagine wrong. there's no family here and only 1 person i consider a friends I only had 3 co-workers plus my friend at my shower and that's it for me as receiving stuff.

- bathtub: i received a bath cradle like this product-6727753.jpg they say it's good to put in the sink, but our sink is way too small. i plan on washing the baby inside our bath tub, that's why i still think i need a baby bathtub like this baby-in-bathtub.jpg

- thermometer: i heard that some pediatritians will not accept our reading of temperature if i call him and say baby has this temperature unless is a rectal thermometer.

- desitin: i'll see if i can buy burts bees

- pacifiers: i'll introduce later on, not sure when yet. i just wanna have everything covered.

- diaper covers: it's for the cloth diapers, i will buy more.

- crib pad: i'll check if the crib matress is waterproof, i think it is, so i won't buy the pads

- storage milk bags vs bottles: i still need to know how many bottles i need. i'll be storaging lots of milk (hopefully if I can). how many bottles is enough?

- absolutely sure about the movement detector.

- gum cleaner: to clean his gums/teeth (when he has them)

- receiving blankets: i am not counting on anyone giving me anything, so i guess i'll buy more

@ Nessa: You are the parent and the pediatrician works for you. If you don't want rectal measurements nobody can force you ti do this to your child. Temporal artery thermometers are used in all good pediatric offices and hospitals. No doctor ever tried to use anything else on our son, even our on-base military ped only uses this method. I would run fast from such a ped!!! He's prolly one of those who prescribe antibiotics for every cold.

Burts Bees is sold in every drugstore now. Weleda is also available at health food stores and on diapers.com. I just ordered diapers & covers from thanksmama.com, they have 5% coupons online, free shipping over $60.

Having tried almost every friggin cover out there I must say the ones I love best are litewraps. They are not the cutest ones, they run a little bigger (perfect for prefolds but baby will have a bubblebutt) but they keep every mess in that might happen. They are cheap and can even go through the superhot wash cycle in my machine...very forgiving.

OUr ped uses those stupid underarm thermometers that ALWAYS come out to 98.1 F for some reason. I still measure Adam rectally if I really have to but he's not liking it anymore. Allie will mostly empty her bowels with every measurement that I'm trying to take...I guess it's time for a new thermometer huh?

We had a really good BRAUN Ear thermometer. I think "somebody" (Adam) threw it in the trash and we didn't notice. I have never seen it again and it didn't appear during the move either. Now we have a Safety 1st Ear thermometer and it SUCKS. On one ear it gives you a temp of 90F..in the other one 103F. I would not recommend the safety 1st thermoeter. The braun one worked great though.

I am totally against the ear/artery thermometer. The hospital I used to work at did a study on those and couldn't find one with an accurate reading. Someone gave me one for the shower but it does NOT work when compared with a rectal reading.

I have a rectal thermometer with a flexible tip and it does the job in 4 secondes or less. Ben doesn't even notice it. When he is sick I check his temp when I change his diaper. Some parents have a problem with the rectal method, but for infants and young toddlers it is the safest way to get an accurate temperature. Once they protest rectal temp-taking I would switch to under-arm or oral.

what's a movement detector?

pacifiers: i'd stick one in the hospital bag, just in case. There's a new study out that using a pacifier reduces risk of SIDS. Not every baby likes to use one though but Ben was happily sucking on his Binky before we even left the hospital.

it's a movement monitor that u put under the baby's crib and it beeps if the baby quits breathing. helps preventing SIDS.
