to all the Mommies: one of my biggest night mares came true today... Hubby was changing Ben while he was eating cereal and all of a sudden he started to choke, and couldn't breathe. I was upstairs when it happened and there is usually nothing that can faze my husband. When I heard him scream I knew something was wrong and as I was flying down the stairs I heard him yell that Ben is choking.

He had him flipped over when I got to his room and he wasn't breathing. I am never going to forget the panicked look in his eyes. We slapped him on the back but nothing came out and then did the Heimlich while Ben was turning white and still struggling to breathe. He finally started to throw up while Chuck was calling 911 and then coughed and thank God, the tiny piece of cereal came out and he took a breath and started to cry.

He was eating the fiber one caramel squares, I would have never thought that he could choke on them. They are tiny little squares, maybe the size of my thumbnail and smaller than the cinnamon cereal squares. I think this is the problem- they are too small to bite if he puts a couple in his mouth, but too big to go down his thorat unchewed.

Just writing to let you know that kids can choke on things you would never expect. We are so happy that he is fine, after he threw up he was coughing up 2 or 3 pieces and they were intact. But it also could have ended much worse.

I have seen 2 toddlers arrive to the ER dead from choking, one of them inhaled a piece of a latex balloon and the other one choked on a piece of hot dog. My friends' son choked on a noodle this summer, she is a pediatric ER nurse (we went to school together) and there was nothing they could do to get it out. Choking is one of the worst things, because it happens so fast and if you can't get it out, help is always going to be at your house too late.

We are so happy that Ben is fine. I just wanted to share this with you guys as you all have small children too.

WOW! Glad he is ok and that you knew how to do the heimlich (F)

you just never know when you are going to need to use it

Well Mommies

Zaid had his 18 month checkup today. He is 34.5 inches and 28lbs. Growing good and developmentally right where he needs to be. He did get his seasonal flu vaccine and his first HepA and he screamed for ohh about a minute and got over it. I took him to the market and got him a balloon to cheer him up. We will spend the day at home praying he doesnt have any reactions. He gets a local reaction when he eats cooked eggs and since there is egg in flu vaccine i was concerned but doctor said the egg in it is soo minimal that you have to be very allergic to have any side effects. I hope hes right.

Chrissy. Glad to hear ur mom is going to be okay. Prayers for her for a speedy recovery

Mostly like me - but actually he has my forehead, Tavo's eyes, my nose and cheeks, his lips and my chin. He also has his perfectly shaped head and neck. :star:

hey ladies... I am so busy it's hard to catch up... we decided to give Ben the H1N1 shot if it is available when we go for his 18 month check up.. there is a big outbreak in our area, my friends' 7 month hold has it and I had a pediatric patient yesterday with the swine flu, who was very sick.

Ironically, the hospital first mandated the shot for all the workers but now doesn't have enough, so I can't get it, although I am exposed to it every week. They will only give it to pregnant employees, but they don't have the preservative free shots, for pregnant people, I don't get it.

@christina: I am so jealous you guys live close to disney! I can't wait to take Ben, I love the Disney parks. Is there a lot to do for a toddler? It sounds like you guys had fun!

Hi everyone, just stopping in to say hi. Adam is actually taking a nap and there's nothing pressing to be done aroung the house, so I had a few minutes to jump online.

We're still getting settled here. Adam is 2 weeks old today. The first week we were battling jaundice and the doctor was trying to avoid him having to go into the hospital under the lights, so we had a whole fiasco of supplementing with formula and me being upset about doing that after having read that it really is not necessary. Just a stressful week overall. Thankfully, the little supplementing I did do did not seem to interfere with the breastfeeding. Now, I am back to BFing exclusively.

Adam has been cluster feeding in the afternoon/evenings for the past few days, which has been pretty exhausting. He'll nurse almost constantly from around 4pm until 11 pm, sometimes taking 15-30 min breaks to doze. I was hoping that would mean that he would sleep through the night, but no - at least he only wakes up to eat around 3 am and 6 am, then he's good until 8 or 9.

He gets pretty fussy when he's trying to move his bowels, and it seems like he's in pain, but everything I've read says that that's pretty normal. He doesn't cry for long periods of time, just for a couple of minutes until he lets a big one rip, lol.

Well, he's stirring now, so I think I'll throw a load of laundry in before he eats again. Hope everyone and their babes are doing well!

Jenn

Jenn, sounds like Adam is doing great, Everything you described is pretty common. The poops get much easier for them around 2.5-3 months. He is so cute. You and Wadi must be so proud <3 Welcome to mommy-hood

I've had no luck finding the H1N1 vaccine for myself and hubby yet. Someone close to me at DHEC said the health department here has it (only the mist so far) and I might be able to talk them into it since Rayan is three months old and we're the primary caregivers, but no dice. So we'll keep on washing hands, etc, and keeping him (and ourselves) out of crowds until it's available. I waited in line for two hours on a weekday for the seasonal flu shot -- can't imagine what the line will be like for the H1N1.

@ Chrissy, I'm glad your mom's condition is treatable. I hope she has a complete recovery very soon.

Glad to read about all the good checkups and see the new photos.

@ Jenn, I'm glad you're settling in and Adam is doing well. I love his new pic. The uncomfortable crying, kicking, etc. is what Rayan does sometimes with the colic, but it usually takes him a while for something to move. Sometimes if I turn on some loud white noise and hold him, I can feel his abdomen relax, and then things sometimes get moving again. It's like the colic gets him all tensed up (it's supposed to be a nervous system thing) and that throws off his digestion until he can relax. We move his legs a lot and sometimes let him go without a diaper for a while. Being able to nurse him lying down has really helped -- I just make sure blankets and pillows are well away from him in case I fall asleep. Rayan had jaundice also for the first few days. The lactation consultant advised me to supplement a little with formula also, using a syringe, and I hated doing it too, but it didn't last and has not seemed to interfere with his breastfeeding.

It's funny how when they've been sleeping and start to stir, you get the urge to a load of laundry or another quick chore before you're incapacitated for a while. Jamal and I usually eat dinner at the coffee table, and if I get there first, I usually wait for him to bring drinks or other last-minute things from the kitchen, but in the beginning when Rayan was cluster feeding so much, I'd dive in and eat as quickly as I could as soon as the plate hit the table since he was bound to demand his own dinner within a few minutes.

I'm the USC.

It's so fun with a little one! I wondered what rides he'd be ok on. We have friends who had season passes and a little girl who is now 3. They told us good advice and about which rides they took their daughter on when she was Kavi's age and stuff. We went on LOTS of rides! :D I think Kavi is still too young to know that things like skeletons are supposed to be scary so he might be more scared when he's a little older. We went on Pirates of the Caribbean, Small World, Peter Pan's flight, Snow White's scary adventures, mad tea party(tea cups but we hardly spun at all), Buzz Lightyear, Jungle Cruise(well just Suj and Kavi went on, I had to leave the line for the bathroom hehe), and there are a handful of other mild rides we went on. Kavi's favorite part was meeting Mickey and Minnie and the Toontown area is perfect for toddlers and young kids. But we all had fun! Kavi wanted to be on our laps for most of the rides though, he didn't cry on any but a couple made him worried-but not hysterical crying! :hehe:

Yes, I was very sceptical about the H1N1 vaccine too, but seeing what it can do to small children has made me change my mind. All the people I know who received the vaccine did not have a reaction. I heard that Tamiflu is supposed to work in some cases. my friends' baby is doing a lot better on Tamiflu, but I have heard of many other cases where the side effects of Tamiflu where so severe, it had to be discontinued.

My pediatrician will not have it until sometime in November, I wonder if that is too late. It ticks me off that at first, they pushed it on everyone, especially the health care workers and now there aren't even enough vaccines for hospital staff who are in direct contact with the virus.
