what is the scientific/medical basis for administering mmr components separately?

although scientifically there is no proof many people have reported side effects after the combo shot. I too have a neighbor who has a very retarded son with severe autism who got the measles within days after the MMR shot and then just went from a healthy, perfect 18 month old kid into a vegetative state for months. He is now 6 and still in diapers, does not cmmunicate. Every time I see him he just screams and holds his ears. Also most parents with autistic children I have talked to give a ####### about what the pharma industry says about vaccine safety. I am sure that there is a genetic link to some forms of autism but I also think that vaccines or anesthesia or other drugs could possibly trigger the onset.

I am kind of torn about the MMR vaccine. Adverse reactions do happen although they are rare. I do want him to have it, I think every healthy child should have it not just for their own good, but also for the protection of immunsuppressed/ chronic sick people. It is scary that parents choose to not vax their children because they are just not thoroughly informed and there have been measles outbreaks lately.

I am personally not a fan of chicken pox parties, I actually don't know why people would do that if a lot less of the actual varicella are injected and could result in immunity. Also, think- if your kid has chicken pox- it may be a minor deal to your healthy child, but it is a highly contagious disease that could be very dangerous to older people, people after organ transplants and so on. same goes for many other vaccines.

I think as a parent you have a certain responsibility. Vaccine schedules are not an entirely bad thing. I chose to have my son vaccinated in the order I find most appropriate, there are some vaccines I don't think are neccessary yet and I have delayed them after getting the ok from the doc, but I am definitely pro vaccination.

The world would be a much scarier place if it wasn't for vaccines.

Ant: welcome! congrats for sticking to breastfeeding. And welcome to all the prejudices and ethical dilemmas associated with it. ;) I was never really comfortable about nursing in public. I had to do it on a plane a few times but I personally just feel awkward exposing myself, even with a cover. I tried the nursing cover but I found just a blanket works just as good. If we went out, I usually bf-ed in the car or pumped. I do understand that there are people who are uncomfortable watching someone breastfeed and this should be respected as much as it should be respected if a mother decides she needs to feed the baby right here, right now.

Unfortunately my family in the US does not really support bf much. Just having to excuse myself and the baby to a bedroom was awkward enough at feeding times. Also nursing past 6 months was considered "more than appropriate". I actually once was told by my MIL that breastfeeding makes my son sick. :wow: If you have people like that in your environment, you need to learn to ignore it and do what you feel is best for your child and most importantly for you. I think only people who never breastfed or didn't bf for more than a few weeks have the stupidest opinions about mothers who do choose to. But it's the same thing with other issues, there are always people who will try to tell you how to do it right. Oh congratulations on your new baby!

the moms who do pox parties here don't leave the house while their babes have the pox. It's kinda a controlled exposure. I don't know what to do. I guess I'm gonna stick with the plan which is not to vax Allie before 24 months and if she should get the pox before that then so be it.

Yeah, I am delaying the shot too, to 24 months but I wouldn't take him to a "party" If he gets it, we will have to find a way to work around our crazy schedules. It is probably doable if you're a stay at home mother, but for people who have jobs and/or school and rely on daycare it could have pretty bad financial consequences. I just could not miss school and clinical, not even one day. And I doubt that all the mothers keep their exposed kids inside until their not contagious anymore. Therefore the thought that there are people out there who cannot wait for an outbreak, to forgo one vaccine, makes me very nervous.

Umm...ok..I'm a little bit bummed here. I didn't mean to offend you or anything, you just seem a little agitated toward that issue. Sorry if I said anything wrong I guess I'm gonna keep quiet with the vax questions as it usually ends in a big argument.

Welcome, Ant.

I breastfed in the car with the windows outside the USCIS office when my husband went for his biometrics. This was the first time I'd nursed him outside of the house or hospital, and it worked out fine. I don't know about inside the building, though. The waiting area at our local office is pretty small.

I still haven't actually nursed in public, but I will park and nurse him if he cries and I'm a few minutes away from the apartment. It's not as awkward as I'd expected.

Hooray for Zaid counting to 5!

I'm the USC.

I hate to brag : ) but Eman has picked up on so much. He counts to ten and sings his ABC's all the way to the end. His first language is Farsi so I am so excited he says these in English...When I take him to the park he plays with the other kiddos but speaks to them in farsi. Then he gets frustrate that they do not understand him...lol...

Envy envy...I'm really getting concerned about Adam. He's never really been the talker. He can talk to 10 in English and 5 in German but he never did it just because he wanted to. I always have to tell him and he basically repeats. Same goes for the ABC. He loves singing the ABC at story time or whenever his toys play the song but he's got big gaps in it and he couldn't do it by himself. I guess I"ll give him a little more time and if I don't see any improvement soon I'll ask the ped if it is normal.

I know that every kid is ready when it's ready and I think that here in America the expectations are so high for young kids to be able to count and sing their ABCs but Adam is now getting passed by kids that are almost 1 year younger than him...

Eveline:

I don't know if this has anything to do with it and I am only going on what I have heard and noticed in one child. But children that are brought up with two languages in the house often have a longer delay in speaking than children with only one language. I'm not trying to discourage you from speaking in both English and German to them (we plan on doing the same in English and Portuguese) but there do seem to be common delays for these kids.

My friend in Italy was doing the same thing for her daughter (for Italian and Portuguese). They would speak in Italian with her sometimes, like when friends were over, all the TVs and movies and things were in Italian, but the parents spoke mostly Portuguese at home. Their daughter was a normal babbling talking child until about 15 months and then at 15 months she just completely shut up! She wouldn't say anything and hardly even made any noise! At first they didn't do anything, but since this continued they took her to the doctor. The doctor told them that it is completely normal for babies who are learning two languages subsequently like that to have a silent period or to take longer to pick up on even simpler things in one of the languages or both. By the time I met the girl, at 4 years old, she was speaking exactly like any other 4 year old in both Italian and Portuguese! Actually, I think she didn't know what to do with me as I confused her. When she spoke to me in Italian I couldn't understand a word she said, and when she spoke to me in Portuguese I could only pick up a word or two (this was like 1.5 years ago), so I really confused her because she knew I couldn't understand either of the languages she spoke!!

I wouldn't worry! And maybe try to google something about babies who learn two languages and their development.

Breastfeeding is awesome if you can do it. :P (You all know my situation) The only time I can't stand seeing a bfing mommy (who doesn't cover) is during Mass - just my own pet peeve. That's the moment when I just shutdown right there.

My friend in Italy is also going through the same thing with her little boy. He just turned 2 and he's not speaking yet, though he understands both English and Italian.

I had a weird dream last night that I had the baby and he was huge (like the 19 lb Indonesian baby), and he also had extremely red hair and we couldn't figure out how on earth he got it.

Sorry I think it came out wrong. I was not offended at all. We are doing the delayed schedule too and I am just as concerned about side effects as you are. I just don't think it makes much sense if parents completely refuse to vaccinate their kids because they are scared of side effects. In the end it will just spike further outbreaks of diseases that have been almost extinguished. The big argument is that, so what, I dealt with Mumps or the Measles when I was a kid and I'm sure my child can deal with it too. That's great but it increases the chance for other people to get sick who probably couldn't deal as well with it as a healthy person. I am sorry if I offended you. Maybe we just should make it a rule to not discuss any more vaccine related issues. :P

@Staashi: by mass you mean like church? That reminds me, I did bf there once because he was crying and hungry and I didn't want to leave and disrupt the service. I don't think there is something wrong with it unless you cover up and don't expose um, private parts. I think a sleeping/nursing baby is much better than a screaming baby in church. On the other hand, it's a good excuse to leave if it's a boring service.

 @ boring service. And yes, I meant Catholic Mass - it just doesn't sit well with me to have an exposed breast right there in Mass. Totally fine with feeding one's baby in Mass (we did that last Saturday night with a bottle).
