We will be getting the flu shot, Sofia is getting the first dosis in October and the second one in December.

Chrissy@ I haven't had my period since July 08, I guess because I'm breasfeeding, and I'm the happiest woman in the world, I hate when I get it, I'm not missing it at all.

=bnb m

Wow that seems like a long time. I was off for a month and I thought there was something seriously wrong with me (knew I wasn't preg). Is it normal for you?

@Nessa: Hope Ben feels better soon.

I went to have Allie's blood drawn today too. they did a pretty good job. One stick and the blood came running. Allie cried for only a second and was a happy baby again. No big deal. Adam was tougher to handle when he had his blood drawn.

Nessa - Hope Ben feels better. It's horrible to watch them have blood drawn, but I tell myself, at least he won't remember it (it's how I can get through it).

Staashi and Nessa - thanks for the baby butt advice :) We've been letting him run diaperless as much as possible and keeping him clean and dry. Haven't tried cornstarch. Sounds like a good idea to try :)

it's completely normal, and rather common while breast feeding. one of many special perks, in my opinion.

Caro: I guess the way they do c-sections depends on the institutions' policy. You were lucky. I don't like the staples, if they can use the dissolving stitches. How are you feeling?

flu shot: I work at a hospital and we are mandated to get the flu shots by Oct 30th. I guess I will have to bite the bullet. I don't think they will have the H1N1 ready in time anyways. I'm not a big fan of viral vaccines and I never had the flu just hearing from so many people who had a bad reaction or Guillan Barre syndrome kind of makes me want to avoid it.

@Nessa: aw sorry they had a hard time drawing blood. for the future- I would never allow them to use the foot for a capillary- in 70% of the time you can't get enough blood out and the squeezing diminishes the results, it also tends to clot a lot because it takes very long to collect.. A vein is always better if possible and if they can't puncture it right away, I would make them stop and try again. Poking around and adjusting the needle really hurts. Also ask your pediatrician for an emla patch before the blood test. It's a local anesthetic that you apply 1 hour before and cover with a plastic patch on his arm or hand and it will numb the skin.

Vaccination Question: I don't know if anybody saw my back to back with Andy on Facebook yesterday. He was wondering if he should wait with his daughters MMR vax or have it given to her on schedule ( at 12 months). Anyway, i told him to wait since the MMR is the shot that seems to just impact the little immune system the most. So many kids with fevers, illness or even autism after that shot. Well, he said that his coworker had his daughter vaxed with MMR at 24 months, she actually got the Measels after that shot and ended up with brain damage causing lifelong retardation. Don't get me wrong, I totally believe Andy and I asked him to post his question on VJ but he said he didn't want a big discussion, which I understand. I don't want to discuss, I just want some opinions because we decided to delay Allies MMR vax until she's 24 months old.

Anyway. My queston is, is it possible that the Measels (if it was the measels) are a side effect of that vaccination? I thought the virus was dead and so you can't get infected with it? Might it have been another side effect? Any opinions?

Edit: allie will get some shots today. She'll get the 3rd DTaP, 2nd Polio and 1st PCV.

We plan on taking Enzo to Argentina next year - we want him to get all the MMR vaccines separately - one day measles, one mumps, one rubella - I don't want to risk it.

MMR is a live vaccine, live attenuated which is why you are contagious for 28 days following vaccination. Same with chickenpox and Flumist vaccines. And yes, it is possible to contract the disease from the vaccine, while highly unlikely. Check out the package inserts of those medications, it's basically all in there.

http://www.merck.com/product/usa/pi_circul...i/mmr_ii_pi.pdf

Staashi, Merck has resumed producing the single shots in the US and they will be available by the end of the year. You can demand from your doctor to have those ordered. If they refuse, find a new doc as that's very inappropriate for a doctor to refuse. The AAP even made a statement that they consider that unethical to turn down selective/delayed vaccinating parents and even non-vaccinating parents.

As always, we don't get flu shots and definetely not the swine flu. It is too new and the swine flu turns more and more out to be not the monster thing the media hyped it to. My very pro-vaccination sister (only thing she didn't give her son is varicella as there aren't sufficient studies of efficacy and disease is super mild anyways) strongly advised the entire family against it.

I get flu shots for myself as I have noticed, for me, it seems that I am less sick on the years I get the vaccine compared to the years I have not. However, I see numerous clients daily and unfortunately, often it seems people come to my office when they are sick and contagious. So I feel like I am always super exposed to germs :) Hubby does not choose to get the flu vaccine. We are debating whether Declan will get it. The regular one that is, not the swine flu ... as I too feel it has not been tested enough and the effects are not truly known.

Thank you Anna. That was exactly what I was wanting to hear. I guess I will ask our pedi to order the MMR separatly as Allie won't be up for the shots until next year anyway. Is anybody considering taking their babes to a chicken pox parties. I know some moms in my playgroup do them but I'm not sure...I don't want Allie to be my experiment but then again..why get a shot for a common childhood illness. I made it through it, so did Eric and so many others...I don't know. We'll see.

As for the flu...we won't get vaccinated. Not for regular nor for piggy flu.

Eveline, when my son was 2 and a half I allowed him to be exposed to chicken pox just to get it over with. at that time the pox vaccine was brand new, but even since then I have heard its only limited effective. the illness wasnt that bad anyway.

we'll probably do flu shots, just because I've had full blown flu twice as an adult and it was by far the most horribly sick I have ever been. the second time was when my husband had only been here for like amonth and I think it scared him how sick I was. so I get the shot diligently now. We;ve already had mild swine flu sweep through so I dont think we need the vaccine :)

I heard that the vaccination is only around 85% effective. ALso, when the child is too young and gets chicken pox, the anibodies might not completely protect against another infection. I guess I wait with Allie. She won't have her varicella shot until 2 years of age so we'll see what happens until then.
