Hello everyone

I have been reading this thread for a while and I finally decided to participate, I have a 4 month old baby, who was born a month after I moved to USA, on March 24th, and he is the cutest baby hehehe...I also wanted to share my experience with breastfeeding, well I have to say that it didn't go well for us, when he was born he wouldn't latch on properly so in his first appoinment with the prediatrician we found out he had lost a lot of weight actually in two days he is lost what he is supposed to lose in a week, so the pediatrician told us to supplement with formula at first I was crashed because I really wanted to breasfeed and I kept reading about nipple confussion and I just though that after getting the bottle he wouldn't breasfeed but anyway I kept trying and finally he learnt and we were doing ok, but it was just very very very painful, he was getting better and I was almost exclusevely breastfeeding for about 2 or 3 weeks but it was still very painful, and suddenly Matthew stopped breastfeeding and he also got some white spots in his mouth he would get super upset every time i tried to feed him, so we went back to the doctor and we found out we both had thrush, that's why it was so painful for me and and also for him, so I had to use some oinment and cover his mouth with some medicine but after 2 weeks of treatment it didn't work for me, Matthew was doing better so he was eating but i was in so much pain every time i feed him i would cry, but I kept on feeding him until after a more aggresive treatment we were able to get rid of the thrush, so i though that know we could continue happily breastfeeding, but no, when he was about 3 to 3 and a half months he decided he didn't want to eat any more, he would scream every time i tried to feed him, and i kept trying but once again he started to lose weight so after almost a month of exclusevely breastfeeding we had to re introduce the bottle which was easier to (force)on him , so at about 3 and a half months we stop breastfeedingi don't know why after such a struggle he stopped but i was getting depressed and overwhelmed hearing cry every time i tried to feed him, ... sorry for the long post just wanted to share my experience

And all of you have very beautiful babies.

Isa1981: You probably lasted longer than I would have with all of the things going on. I give you credit for hanging in there. I was heartbroken when my milk never really came in. I got depressed. In the end, it was all for the best, even though I couldn't see it at the time. Both of the twins lost close to a pound of their birthweight. By bottle feeding, we were able to closely monitor what they were eating. Also, because of the infection I got in the incision, I was able to take the antibiotics I needed because I was not breastfeeding. Usually things have a great way of working themselves out for the better.

Caybee: wondering about you girl! I hope all is well and you are being induced or have the baby!

AFU: I got the twins to eat their first cereal yesterday. I have tried all sorts of things like mixing it with fruits and vegetables in the past, but they wanted no part. They hate textures and gag and vomit. Yesterday was the first day BOTH of them ate some rice cereal mixed in with their fruit. Yay for minor victories!

so my sister is back at the hospital, getting treatment for acute deep vein thrombosis and a bad case of mastitis. Baby is admitted too. Poor thing. She's always had trouble with varicose veins and has to get these heparin shots daily but still ended up with a thrombosis. Looks like I'm going to have to visit her at the hospital next week.

autum: what happened to your member-name??

@Isa: welcome! Sorry you had so much trouble with bf. I want to hit the people who say breastfeeding does not hurt when it's done correctly. Yes it can hurt like hell, even if you do everything the right way. Hope your baby gains his weight back soon!

@Autumn: Yeah?? what happened to your name? I was wondering who that was this morning until I saw the pic in the signature. Weird.

@Chnst: I'm so sorry to hear that about your sister. Mastitis isn't fun. Hope she gets better soon.

@Isa: sorry you had so much trouble breastfeeding. Women here need way more bf support. Good luck.

@Anna: Glad you found out what it is, and hope the you feel better soon (F)

@moms that had problems breastfeeding: did you try to go to la leche league or see a lactation consultant, and if so, did it help? as part of our Bradley method preparation I'm supposed to go to a LLL meeting, but I've been strategically avoiding it :P I know we'll get a lot of help from the midwives at the birthing center with breastfeeding both at the delivery and follow up well baby appointments, so not really sweating it, but wanting to know what your experience was with that :)

@Vi: I've had a lot of recommendations for swadlers, and we already have a few of the big packs  But the new Huggies have a leak protection barrier for the back and a color change indicator for when the diaper is wet, which I thought it was the coolest thing. I remember when we baby sat for our friend their little toddler (2 years) was still in diapers and I couldn't tell when he needed a diaper change, I ended up changing him late every time  I guess a baby would cry as soon as he is wet, so it would be easier to tell when he needs changing? <-(ultimate rookie mom question!)

LOL @ Autumn's new name

Saludos,

Caro

@Caro: I'm afraid not even lactation consultants or LLL can help. My friend gave birht in a birthcenter and didn't get help from their LC, she called LLL, they never called back. She eventually would just give up on breastfeeding after 8 weeks. Some moms have so much trouble breastfeeding that it might just be easier to give a bottle for everybody's sake.

BTW..it's world breastfeeding week (ends tomorrow).

The swaddlers have a color that changes when the diaper is wet, and I don't know about other babies but Sofia never cries or complains when she is wet, I just check if the diaper looks big in the bottom (inflado de pipi). Talking about my little one, she is doing really good with the new routine, bath and going to sleep at 9.30pm and I'm supe happy. Today was the big day and she ate cereal for the first time, it was so funny first she was "sucking" from the spoon and when she realized that wasn't mami's breast she really started eating it, she finished the whole thing, we went crazy taking pictures I'll post one soon.

Isa@ Welcome!

Caybee@ We hope everything is well, can't wait to see the baby picture.

@ Caro - The hospital where I delivered has 3 lactation consultants on staff, and I worked with all of them. I also did a lot of research on my own and contacted a Canadian doctor who is well known for his work advocating for breastfeeding. My ob-gyn was supportive and tested my prolactin level and then prescribed meds to increase my milk production. I felt very supported and it did help and breastfeeding was getting a lot better, until Declan's surgery. It affected his routine for sure and also, I am sure I was giving off frightened, anxious vibes. Even though the nurses there were supportive too and encouraged me to try to breastfeed (which I did), I had such a hard time relaxing to breastfeed when I was holding my baby with tubes coming out of him!

@Caro: I talked to the lactation consultant at the hospital, she had no clue what she was doing or saying, showed up hours late for appointments and was gone after an average of 30 seconds (after she squeezed my boobs and told me I shouldn't have problems nursing). she was no help at all.

Neither was the lactation "specialist" at my pediatrician office. I had the problem that I was severely engorged, it took 2 months to have a bearable letdown. I was in so much pain, but the only thing these lactation people were trained for was women who don't have enough milk.

I actually found help here in the Babycorner (Eveline gave me a link to Kellymom and LLL websites) and tipps to reduce milk supply (cabbage leaves), how to correct foremilk/hindmilk imbalance etc.

I am still so thankful for that. So remember if you run into problems, to ask here or any other mom who might have had similar experiences, they might have better tips up their sleeve than any lactation specialist who has a masters degree but no real experience.

diaper changes: haha, a lot of babies will not cry when it is time for a diaper change. The diapers nowadays soak up a lot, that's why they don't "feel" as wet as cloth diapers. It can still irritate the skin, that's why you should change at least every 2-4 hours (pee) and after each bm (you will go through a lot of diapers in the first weeks, and then gradually use less). After a few months, you don't have to change him at night unless he has a bm. And the poop/pee less frequent during the day.

Also: try to stick with one brand of diapers, some children get diaper rash after switching brands.

@Vi: glad everything is going well with Sofia! I wish Ben would be a good sleeper like her!

Allie will cry when she feels that her diaper (I'm talking about a sposie here) is wet. Adam however doesn't care. ONe day he pooped while playing in the backyard and I didn't notice until I saw what looked like PUBES on his legs. The poo had already travelled around to the front of the diaper and was getting hard. He don't care, there's more important things in life for him than having a poopy diaper taken off
