@sara: I just read your post. You're right, that was one of our main points, that he will interact with other children. He loves other kids, and shares and I want to encourage it. I guess it is just so much harder on me than on him.

I think after this first few days and once you start really seeing how much he enjoys it, you will actually find yourself looking forward to his time away and having some quiet time and/or grown up time for yourself :)

My sister is 9 days overdue today... I feel so bad for her, she has a high risk pregnancy and still has to give herself the heparinshots every day, but they refuse to induce. the baby measuerd 4200g (over 9lbs)- both of her other children were >4000g too, and had to be induced but they want to wait until August 2nd. I'm glad they're not too c-section happy over there but in her case, she's been through so much, bedrest, high blood pressure, and her right leg is killing her, she can hardly walk. She's dilated, 100% effaced, head is down, just the contractions are missing!

Stef, what the hell are they waiting for? My doc wouldn't dream of going past 39.5 - 40 weeks with a high risk preg, because of the risk to mother and baby. Babies are totally susceptible to dying at this stage. He said he's seen too many high risk women have babies die in the womb because the placenta dies. Especially with the preeclampsia - that's scary. I will say this, after everything I went through (which I don't think I told you all my hell story of L&D) a c-section is lovely and you just want this over.

@ chnst Glad things are moving along at last! I share your concern about your sister. I hope her labor starts or the doctors take some action soon.

This may sound like a silly question, but I'm at the weird stage I guess -- cognitive function has flown completely out the window and I can't stay awake. I saw a packing list that said to take the baby book to the hospital to put footprints in it and so forth. I haven't bought one yet and I'm thinking about taking my time and scrapbooking one after the baby is born, even though I've never done anything like that before. Will I really need the actual book or pages for the book at the hospital, or can I just take whatever they give me and go from there? I guess I'm so afraid of needing something at the hospital and not having it that I'm obsessing about the little things

@Caro: I got the footprints of both babies in the hosptial and then put it in their scrapbook. Also a cute Idea is to have it put on your gown or daddy's shirt but we didn't do that. I eventually took their footprints again when they were around 5 months old or so.

good luck...you are almost there.

I feel so bad for your sister! If I'm uncomfortable now, I can't imagine 9 days overdue! But if she's dilated and 100% effaced, it sounds like things are already moving for her. Has she tried all the natural things?

Walking

red raspberry leaf tea

sex

get a massage (relaxation can help get the oxytocin going to help bring contractions)

accupressure (pressure points are between thumb and pointing finger, ankle, and top of the palate)

Nipple stimulation (if she feels too weird about that, she can just use her breast pump)

spicy food

(If I think of others I'll send them your way)

I hope the contractions start soon!

Saludos,

Caro

@ chnst: Things are prolly gonna move soon for her, being completely effaced and dilated. I'm jealous of her obgyn, no ob in the states would "let you go" that far. I remember telling my MD sister that they induce here so early and she was mortified that they consider induction for a healthy mom and baby before 42 weeks!!!

I hope you and Ben will do fine. I am really not an advocate of daycare as I have none but horrible memories of daycare. My nephew will start August 24th now. My sister was able to push the date a little.

@ Staashi: If you go overdue in Germany, baby and mom are monitored closely. My sister went for a NST every other day. They wouldn't continue the pregnancy if mother and baby were at risk. They just try to avoid a botched induction as very often mom's body isn't ready for labor yet and baby still wants to cook. As long as mom and baby are fine, there is no reason for induction. The stillborn rate only goes up 10 days after due date, and yet again, with close monitoring, both mom and baby are perfectly safe. Germany's fetal and maternal outcome is way better than in the US, unfortunately (for the US).

Soooo.... Jona is cruising... And he crawls up to the Radio Flyer and pulls himself up and walks with it! Yeah! :) My little wriggleworm can be distracted during diaper changes with lots of cuddling or I stick the cat in his face.... Works like a charm :P

My dad will send baby pics of my nephew finally today.... He forgot the camera at my sister's place, oh well. He's apparently a little jaundiced but doing well and got the hang of breastfeeding quickly. :)

I was shocked to read in several other forums that apparently lots of German women are scared of labor and go with a c/s right away. I thought no OB (especially in Germany) would do that but it seems to be the case.

Yay for cruising Jona. I can't believe it's been a year. Last year this time I was hoping Allie would come soon, having my membranes stripped all the time and drinking castor oil (while posting here too haha). Anna, I remember all you did last year was hoping that jona wouldn't come too soon....but I guess he didn't want to wait anymore either :luv:

I agree with staashi, in my sisters case. I am usually all for waiting the full 42 weeks, but she's had pretty much all of the ugly parts of pregnancy going for her. I am actually very surprised that they are waiting so long. The whole pregnancy has been taking a huge toll on her, she says there is no room left on her thighs for the injections (she can't use her stomach for obvious reasons) and she is incredibly uncomfortable with the blood pressure and water retention. I have actually seen quite a few stillborns in Germany most of them were past the due date, and very large babies. so I am a nervous auntie. Every time the phone rings I jump, hoping it's my mom telling me she went into labor. I am more anxious about this baby being born than my own, haha.

I just hope everything goes well, she went past 42 weeks and had to be induced with the other two (she had them natural, without epidural!!), so hopefully little "clara" (I've been calling her clara since I found out she was pregnant) will be here soon.

@Caro: yes, she has tried pretty much anything, except castor oil (I don't even know if that stuff is available in Germany)

yeah they do anything if you request it. it's sad but I have seen the majority of "privatpatienten" requesting a c/s from the "oberarzt/chefarzt" who usually do a far worse job than the regular surgeons. I think the only reason why there are less incidences of c/s in Germany compared to the US is that the average german uses a midwive for delivery.

I agree with the midwife thingie... It does help a lot!!! So much support compared to being alone with a nurse popping in your room every now and then...

@ Evi: Oh boy I remember... Didn't you go in for an attempted induction for Allie? I was fuming last year at this point cause the obgyn wouldn't give me anymore terbutaline. Jona sure would have cooked longer if I had gotten it...

@caybee: I didn't bring the babybook to the hospital. I just glued the piece of paper with his tiny footprint and my fingerprint on it in the babybook. Not like you're already bringing a whole trailor load of stuff to the hospital.

@Kelly: hope all goes well with your sister~

@Anna: Yes, I did go in on August 13 for induction but they let me go back home since Allie's head was too far up and my cervix wasn't thinned out enough so they told me to be back on August 15th.

Jona sure was fast but you have always said that he was gonna come earlier than expected.
