When Henry had his 2 month shots we had to have him weighed by the Dr before he could prescribe the dosage of Tylenol to give him. Also with the concentrated Tylenols now I think some parents don't realize it is CONCENTRATED! As for Tylenol or its equivalent in Europe, we always used Calpol for fevers and pain for my sister, brother and DS1. Anything Asprin based which Motrin is was a no-no.

motrin is ibuprofen based. Aspirin = aspirin. Tylenol = acetaminophen. It is confusing. But you're right, aspirin is contraindicated for infants and young children.

@Anna: I remember the temperature for acetaminophen use at the hospital used to be 39 degree Celsius. Then right before I left it was raised to 39.5 C

Children with prior fever seizures were supposed to take acetaminophen suppository by 38.8-39.0 C to prevent seizure. I guess there is more awareness now.

I was raised on paracetamol. When I was sick, my mom gave it to us like it was candy, just "to take the edge off". Thanks for ruining my liver mother.

@caro: glad your shower was such a success!! I loved my shower, it was so much fun and we got most of the things off of our registry too. Having all of the babystuff ready totally amplifies the excitement, doesn't it? I spent the last 8 weeks washing all the clothes (don't do it, because there are so many things you either can't use or want to return once the baby is there and you realize they don't fit or are not weather appropiate)

@ Twila: See I had a similar experience, and I only took one Tylenol a day for a couple days! It was like an eye-opener to me, pills are pharmaceuticals which can help, but are also toxic and should be taken carefully only.

@ chnst: Oh boy I remember suppositories, my mom gave them to me a couple of times, but really not often. We had a really old pediatrician who I only got to see when I was really sick, which was not very often. I remember when I had mumps all he said was not to worry, it's just mumps, and he was right. When I had a cold we always did the cold wet towels around the calfs. My grandma was around a lot and she didn't believe much in medication, rather in chamomile tea and other home remedies. Do you remember the liquid sweet antibiotic they had in East Germany (Perlocombin or so)? I was supposed to take them once at age 5. I said I took them and flushed it down the toilet  Miraculously, I was still healthy two days later...

Oh yeah, aspirin is never ever for kids. Ibuprofen is ok, but apparently many parents overdose. When we got the iron drops, they kept insisting to do the right dosage, I mean duh I can read a dropper, but they said many, many parents just give their kids too much of everything.

I heard on the radio that the deal with vicodin and tylenol started because people were taking vicodin without realizing that it is acetaminophen, and then Tylenol extra strength on top of that, causing overdose; so now they want to stop selling vicodin and tylenol extra strength. IMHO, I think it's silly - You're not dealing with the root cause of the problem which is that people need to be more informed regarding medications and not just pop random pills and dosage. Soon people will start overdosing because they took 20 regular tylenols because they couldn't get a hold of vicodin and thought that would be the right dosage for them.

Caro

@Caro: yeah, I agree. Didn't they already pull the extra strength otc drugs of the shelves? I don't think you can get anything over 200mg anymore, but I'm not sure. Which doesn't help, because like you said, people will pop 5 instead of 1 or 2.

I think tylenol for infants is ok, as long as it is administerd correctly and in the right dose. I think the whole controversy is more related to adults overusing vicodin/tylenol on a frequent basis. Doesn't the label on a tylenol bottle say not to use it more than a few days?

Crazy how some people think 'it will help more if I take more.'

My mom brought us 2 big bottles nurofen from Germany (ibuprofen) and we use that when Ben gets sick. It is more cost efficient. I can't believe how much a tiny bottle of infants motrin costs compared to the huge adult bottles.

so Ben finally took his first 3 steps today!

He took a step at starbucks yesterday, but hubby would kill me if I told him that this was the place our son started walking.

haha all the starbucks clerks there were sooo excited. They've known him since he was 2 weeks old.:innocent:

about the chasing- I am already chasing him all over the place, he crawls at 80 mph all over the house/outdoors, he is unstoppable, lol. I doubt it will get any better, but at least I don't have to carry this heavy little guy everywhere. I'm hoping to get a video of him walking, but of course he hasn't made a second attempt yet, despite us sitting there all day with the camera and all the neighbors waiting for him to get up and walk...

I don't remember much medicine my mom gave us as kids -- maybe a baby aspirin from time to time because they didn't know -- or at least talk about -- that being dangerous then. I know for colds she would mix lemon and honey and a tiny bit of corn whiskey and give it to us in not much larger than a thimble-sized cup -- strange remedy for a teetotaler to give her kids, but I think the pediatrician gave her the recipe, and it did the trick :)
