If you want to use pain medication/fever reducer, rather use Motrin than Tylenol. Tylenol is really bad, the FDA is going to pull quite a few brands of Tylenol stuff and change the recommendations for its dosage (it is currently grossly overdosed). Just my 2 cents...

Jona weighs 26 pounds too and he's not even 11 months old ;) But he actually thinned out recently, his legs got so much longer.

The Stonyfield vanilla yogurt = best yogurt I have ever had. It has a good consistency too. I don't like the Dannon or Safeway organics brand that much cause it is super liquidy. Trader Joe's housebrand is good too, but we don't have Trader Joe's here

@Caro: yay hope you enjoy your baby shower!

I read the same article in parents magazine. I was so shocked to read that they performed open heart surgery on infants without any analgesia assuming they can't feel pain . They just gave them muscle relaxants and these poor babies couldn't even cry, just lay there and endure the pain. That was just as recent as the 80ies. Made me sick. And what's worse is that so many doctors nowadays still think that boys don't feel anything when they get circumcised. How stupid is that.

The cream is called EMLA, we used it at the hospital I worked at before starting IV's on infants and toddlers and it works great. I'm not sure if it is an rx over here, but it doesn't hurt asking the pediatrician for it. It takes 60-90 minuts to make the skin numb and they won't feel the needle.

i've read about adult dosages of tylenol being changed and vicodin being taken off the market, but i haven't seen anything concerning infant tylenol dosing. where did you see it? motrin is not fda approved for infants under 6 months. i would check with a pediatrician before giving it to a baby not yet 6 months.

I have to dig it up. Motrin under 6 months you have to talk to the pedi to get a dosage. My pedi in Cali says never give Tylenol to infants, toddlers, children, never. He has seen bad results; also many pedis in Europe never give Tylenol to children. I am sure within a couple years it will not be recommended at all for children anymore.

@ chnst: I find this equally troubling. Lots of people seem to think you can do whatever to babies since they don't remember

I haven't heard about the tylenol for infants being bad either. Of course if people overdose/ use it for a long period of time, there's strong chance of liver damage, but I don't think it causes harm in single doses for acute fever/pain (if calculated by the child's weight). The only thing that pedi's in Germany recommend is not to use it too soon as a fever reducer. Let the child develop the fever, then use antipyretics to help reduce it. Some parents give it to soon, or for very low temperatures, resulting in overuse/overdose.

Motrin used to be the drug with the red flag with infants for chances of gastrointestional bleeding and a couple other side effects. The only thing that I find strange is that they recommend parents to give babies a dose of motrin/tylenol BEFORE shots. Makes absolutely no sense.

I'm using FEVER ALL suppositories on my kids. I never gave them anything for fever after shots since I know where it was coming from and I knew that it is only temporary and will go down after a few hours by itself. They hardly ever have a temperature or are cranky after shots anyway.

I read the same article in "Parents" while waiting at the OB's office :) I'd never heard of the newer topical pain relievers.

Today I finished repainting the baby's dresser. I also brought in the porch rocker from the balcony, scrubbed it, and touched up the paint. Then I bought some padding and fabric to make seat and back cushions for it. It's finally starting to look like a nursery in there :) Car seat base is installed but I'm going to have someone check it. Biophysical profile and nonstress test were both good this week. My blood pressure had been a little elevated a couple weeks in a row, but it was back to normal yesterday. On Tuesday, they'll run that strep test and start checking the cervix once a week. I can't believe how close we're getting now. Glad I still get a burst of energy during the day, but by the evening, I'm wiped out.

Hubby has just come online from Morocco :) More later. Best wishes to all!

Wow Roland, that's quite early :)

@ chnst: Our doctor back home never wanted us to take Tylenol. Unless you hit 40 degrees celsius, he never said to worry. I talked lots with my MD sister and the German medical community is starting to strongly discourage Tylenol use unless in emergencies (aka really, really high fevers).

My SIL's pedi is Swedish and practices in CA. He doesn't want her to give her DS ever Tylenol. Most pedis I know / heard of also never tell parents to give pain relievers before shots... it masks potential adverse reactions and can make them worse. There are a couple studies out that Tylenol lowers Glutathione which is important for the body's function of getting rid of toxins and other intruders (bacteria, viruses). So the medical community is definitely onto something there. My personal bad experience with Tylenol of course makes me more aware of the ongoing research.

I am hesistant to give my babies Tylenol as well. I only do it as a last resort. I was sick about 9 years ago. I kept running low grade fevers every night and feel just miserable. I would take two tylenol and go to bed. I would feel ok the next morning. The cycle repeated for more than a week and a half before I went to the doctor. They ran a blood test to check for infection and my liver enzymes were soooooooooo screwed up from just that short time / amount of tylenol. I refuse to take it now and try not to give it to my little ones. Luckily, once I found it out and stopped taking it, everything went back to normal.

I too avoid giving Declan Tylenol. Our pediatrician felt that Motrin is more effective and I agree. Speaking of which, I just gave my poor boy some because he is miserably sick with a fever :( Last night, he was so miserable. Hubby and he slept in the bed together and I went to the other room (I had an extremely stressful day at work and hubby was nice to let me get rest). Tonight is my turn with Declan. He seems even worse than last night, clingy and crying and whimpering pitifully. And he hates the cold compresses and pretty much anything I am doing to try to help him.

@ Nessa - It gets a bit easier after time. The first weeks after I returned to work were hideous, but it has evened out and I am able to enjoy my job again.

The baby shower was a success!! I had a great time, and I'm so touched by all the love shown for our baby :luv:

We got so many wonderful gifts, we are almost all geared up for him  And people used the registry a lot which is great!

I didn't take any pictures because I was so busy all the time, but I'll post some when my MIL sends me her pictures.
