and something else that i didn't like, when i told the pediat. he had a couple of episodes where he'd eat for 3 hours, taking breaks of like 15 min, then eat some then another break and then eat, she said i should give him a pacifier. i don't want to give him a pacifier. he wasn't just on my nipples, he was actually having milk.

Nessa: You need to feel comfortable with your son's pediatrician. I see nothing wrong with looking for someone else since you will be seeing them often during the first year and they will be there for your questions. I love my babies' ped. He is such a wonderful guy. He even posed for pics with them when we took them the first time. The head nurse is wonderful as well. They have really tried to help us with formula from the Similac rep.

Nessa, something about eating for 3 hours seems just bizarre. I'm not sure, but with my sister's two bf babies she never nursed for 3 hours straight. Milk production is not continuous...it's not like a trough where there is water there for the cows - it takes time for milk to come back in...toward the end of his feeding there will be the hind milk which is the high-fat content milk. It sounds like Ben is nursing for comfort, which is also known as pacifying - thus the reason for pacifiers.

Read below:

My baby wants to nurse for comfort. Is this OK?

If your baby seems to be getting enough milk, but continues to suck for an hour or more, he or she might be nursing for comfort rather than for nourishment. So, how do you know? Once your baby has fed vigorously, he or she may stay on your breast but show these signs of non-nutritive sucking (or pacifying):

seems satisfied

stops sucking and swallowing

plays with your nipple

Early on, it's OK to let your baby nurse for comfort, but it can become problematic as your little one gets older because he or she may need to nurse to take a nap or go to bed at night. So, at some point in the second or third month, you should probably wean your baby off of sucking for comfort and make breastfeeding sessions about nourishment not pacifying.

Instead of nursing, you may want to offer your baby his or her thumb or hand to suck on. You also could consider giving your little one a pacifier if you child doesn't seem to be hungry. Because of a lower risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) now recommends letting babies go to sleep with a pacifier. However, you should only do this after breastfeeding is well established (usually after 1 month).

If possible, you should also hold off on introducing a bottle until breastfeeding is well-established. Some babies have "nipple confusion," though the likelihood of this happening is much less after 4 to 6 weeks.

I work at a preschool in the infant room and lots of parents don't want their child to get hooked on a pacifier...but let me tell you...It will become your new best friend!!! and most often times than not - depending on the child- it will be easy to take away when they get older. One child (8 months) used to want his pacifier to go to bed and then all of a sudden he didn't want it ever again...I say try it!

@ Nessa - You definitely have to feel comfortable with the pediatrician. I don't think you are being picky at all. I love how supportive my pediatrician's office has been this year. I feel very comfortable with them and think every mom needs to have that level of comfort with their child's doctor.

@ Vi - I am so sorry about your grandmother (F)

For those mommies of babies with teeth ---- how do you brush their teeth? For Declan, I have been varying between a wet cloth gently rubbing his teeth and gums and this infant toothbrush (basically a rubber covering for my finger with soft bristles on it). Declan loves getting his teeth brushed, but I think he is teething again and he has now started to bite down when my finger is in his mouth .... and dang IT HURTS!!! That little guy has a strong jaw. It doesn't matter if I use the cloth or the rubber thingy, he still gets me with his sharp little teeth. My husband suggested getting a toddler toothbrush (like a regular toothbrush). Any ideas?

@autum: we bought a set at Babies R us, it has one of those silicone "brushes" with the soft bristles and it has a handle. Maybe you could get one of these and he can bite down his chompers on the handle instead of your finger. Oh, and there's a Babies R Us in Mahopac. wink wink.:yes:

Ben's upper front teeth are finally shining thru his gums. Yay! It took him a mere four months to grow them.

@Kenza: all power to the binkies! I have yet to see a high school kid sucking on a pacifier, so of course they will sooner or later wean. I'd rather have my kid suck on a pacifier then their thumbs, because thumb-sucking is harder to give up then to make a toddler donate his Paci to the squirrel babies.

There are so many studies out about pacifiers preventing SIDS, and malformation of teeth vs thumb-sucking. even hospitals encourage parents to use pacifiers now.

So much cuteness in this thread! :luv:

@Vi: Sorry to hear about your Grandma (F)

@Eric: Good luck! I hope your wife has a smooth, quick delivery :)

We had our 4th prenatal appointment today, baby and I are doing fine. I can't believe we are almost half way  The baby is very active now, moving and kicking. Around 7 or 8 pm he'll give me 1 or 2 very hard kicks (the ones you can actually see the belly move), I can't believe he is so tiny and can kick that hard!. He was moving for the midwife too and she commented on how strong his movements and heartbeat are, and that we have a very strong little guy on the way :star:

I turned down all genetic testing today. I always thought that I'd want to know, but when they asked me, I automatically said no. Weird :)

Saludos,

Caro

Nessa: Do you have the same issue that I have, which is on Tricare Prime you have to go to the base pediatrician??? Ours was ok at the old base, but not exactly a great guy. When I said I didn't want a certain vaccine from the base clinic because it has mercury, he said oh no it has none, I said oh yes, you can read up on it in its package insert, which is when he replied oh I guess I should read it. I would expect from my doctor to know package inserts, side effects and ingredients of all pharmaceuticals before he recommends them, and not to be a puppet of the pharma industry. It is very hard to get an off-base referral, or you have to switch the baby to Standard, which has deductibles and co-pays... >Argh.

Well pacis are fine and Jona takes them, but I don't mind pacifying on the breast. Comfort nursing is fine in my book and if you like it, no reason to force a paci on Ben. Jona sometimes is on the ####### still for up to 60 minutes, and as I said, I'm fine with that. When I get tired of it I quickly remove him and gently insert a paci.

Chnst: That is nice, donating the paci to squirrels, my parents on their ped's advice took me to the dentist who gave me a lecture and collected my pacis. NO need to say I still hate dentists!

he did not eat for 180 min straight. He ate a total of 80 min on and off, taking small breaks in between for 3 hours. I mentioned it was unusual because he usually takes 2-3 break. Sometimes he takes less than an hour, but that's when he eats for 15 min and falls asleep, so he's hungry again.

@caro: i turned down all genetic tests as well. My thoughts on it were, I'd never get an abortion, so if he had a problem I'd prefer not to spend the rest of my pregnancy stressing out about it.

@ anna: charles has tricare prime through his employer. From what I understood by speaking to tricare yesterday was that we have 60 days of tricare prime automatically and then it becomes standard. I think Charles would have to enroll him on his insurance to become prime, he's not enrolled automatically to charles insurance once he's born.
