Sorry, Caro . That's probably the worst aspect of daycare.

Our diaper genie doesn't smell at all. But he still has those sweet-smelling BF poops. Guess I should wait till he moves to solids before I rave too much about the diaper genie.

I've found that once you move to solids, yes, poop stinks, but we just flush it down the toilet. Normally, unless it is a truly messy soft diaper, you don't really have residual odor in the diaper. We just toss it with the regular daily trash.

The thing that gets me though is E loves to go poop right after a fresh diaper has been put on.

Caro, I feel your pain, Zaid was sick for months when he first started day care. It does get better though. He will have loong periods of time when he wont be sick then a month or two of on and off sickness. So far Zaid hasnt been sick or had a fever since November 1st so Id say for him to be healthy for 3 months with not even a runny nose is pretty good, especially with flu season being around.

My nephew, who never went to day care and never was exposed to many kids started preschool this year, since september he has been back and forth to the doctor non stop, and his sickness turns into extreme every time, like bronchitis and brutal ear infections, so maybe its better to have them exposed at a younger age.

Zaids behavior has turned around the past few weeks and the tantrums are very rare. Hes been extra lovey on me and hates when I leave. Needless to say its been really nice having my sweet boy back His vocab is extraordinary and its so nice being able to communicate with him. Its so much easier now that he can tell me "mommy more milk" instead of screaming and throwing a fit bc I didnt know what he wanted lol.

Once moving to solids, like baby food solids, it sure does make the poops smell, BUT.....JUST WAIT till you move to table food. Those are NASTY! hubby and I fight over who will change him bc my gag relex is sooo bad lol.

Chrissy, great news about your mom. I'm glad she's doing better.

We just have a plain diaper pail, nothing fancy, but it doesn't smell -- then again, he's still on breast milk exclusively. I know it will get worse.

Jenn, congrats on the Exersaucer We went to Target the other day to get one for Rayan, but they were sold out of the one we wanted, and we wanted to use a gift card, so we ended up getting something that looks like a frog with a center pedestal. Rayan loves it, but he has to have pants on rather than just a onesie or his fat, little legs get stuck.

I only bought a couple of sleep gowns for Rayan, and he outgrew those in about the first week. He sleeps (or HAS slept) fine in just a onesie most of the time because the weather is so mild here, but if I had it to do over again, I'd get several larger gowns.

Have to check -- I think our stroller is one of the ones on recall. But I also bought a basic umbrella stroller from Target, and he does well in that now for short distances, so I'm going to get one to keep in the other car and one to leave at my parents' house. It maneuvers so easily, and if he's restless and we're staying in one place for a while, I can rock it back on the rear wheels and swivel it back and forth, and he calms down.

Last night was another crazy one. He did pretty well until it was time for bed. It was like he was obviously very tired, but he didn't want to go to sleep and miss all the fun. I swaddled him as well as I could three times, and all three times, he burst out -- think the Incredible Hulk, including the roar. Whatever we did, he cried. He nursed, but he kept pulling off after a couple of sucks and yelling and kicking. There were no tears, and it didn't seem like a cry of discomfort or pain. It didn't seem to be related to teething either, though I did try a half-dose of Tylenol and a couple of teething tablets just in case. He frankly sounded just plain mad -- one cry sounded like a loud, angry sheep (what a thing to say, huh? ). I think he's probably just going through an adjustment because he's suddenly SO much more aware of everything around him, and he's mastering reaching out and grabbing whatever catches his eye. It's like he wants to get up and run and check out everything, but he's still grounded, and that frustrates him. He may also be going through another growth spurt. That's my guess anyway. My husband has been with me on trying to hold out for the six-month mark on the cereal, but last night even he was thinking about going ahead until I told him that if we gave it to him for the first time late at night and it disagreed with him, he'd be up all night for sure. Thankfully, he finally fell asleep around 1 am. I woke up once in the night -- we opened our eyes at the same time and looked at each other. He smiled but went immediately back to sleep, and he didn't wake up to nurse again (as far as I know) until 6 am when my alarm went off.

We have a diaper champ and I have been happy with it. Contains the smell even now that Kavi eats table food and stuff. I stick vanilla bags in there too.

Chrissy: welcome back and all the best for your mum. It must be tough to be so far away...

Caro: I think the first year is tough and then it gets better. They have to build their little immune systems and get sick all the time. Ben was in the infant room last semester, for only 2 days/week. He didn't really catch anything bad. I guess the infants are less liekly to bring in germs. This semester they upgraded him to the toddler room, so I guess he will probably be sick a lot more.

@Anya: seems like you are doing good with your preparation! Check out a Babies R Us if you have one nearby and register in the store. They will explain you what you need and you'll get a gift. They also have free classes and stuff.

I think it really depends on the individual. I know kids who didn't get sick in daycare, and others who are permanently sick. I do think a lot is genetics. Jona isn't in daycare, but meets other toddlers and loves to lick shopping carts (I don't wipe them down)... So far so good. I was sick a couple of times and he never really caught it, I guess cause my breastmilk already supplied him with antibodies to the bug I was fighting. I think he'll catch more bugs once he is weaned (hubbie and I settled for starting to wean on his second birthday).

@ Anya: I totally forgot, if you have upscale neighborhoods around, check out their baby second hand stores and Goodwills. The ones in the SFO bay area were stuffed with new, unused, good stuff for basically nothing. I bought baby clothes with tags on them for $1-$3 a piece. Also Pottery Barn Kids toys for under $5, completely unopened. Also craigslist might have some good stuff (maybe prefolds and diaper covers also!).

I remember when I was kid and I used to ask questions I would be told, "that's grown up business, now go play" and so I knew that when I had a little one I would answer each and every question...within reason, ofcourse. We passed by the wine/liquor aisle at the grocery store and he was adamant he wanted some and I kept telling him it will make him sick but he wanted to know why he couldnt have some...he's such a curious fellow...needless to say I use a lot of re-engaging techniques to get him focused on something else.

I like your techniqe better than mine but I problably would dip my finger in the biterest beer I could find and have him taste it that should be no more question after I assume.. but if he still want more i know I got a problem child just jk, I dont know what I would do actually..

My husband has the most unrealistic idea about baby.. he think he'll just put the baby in the bassinet for the first 6 months 'in our room' .. grrrrrr...we have planty of room and we do have a crib but I dont know why he kept insist on having the baby only in the bassinet, for the first few weeks problably but not the whole time. he also dont think the baby need a nursary and much 'stuff' oh well..he'll probably faint if I show him the 'list' lol. I want at least a space where I can put the crib, changing table and baby stuff in so its organized and not all over the place, and the baby will eventually use that room anyway.. ahhh a joy of planning...

Well, I tried that technique with espresso when he wanted some of mine and he asked for more....hehe...and plus, we don't drink so can't do it unless I buy some for this purpose

My Italian friends and even my hubby and BIL were given Cafe con Leche or Lattes as children - 3-4 years old. Yeppers!

they like to drink coffee with me and Luis sometimes so I make them hot chocolate and they call it chocolate coffee
