My wife's adjustment of status was recently approved and she finally has her permanent resident card in hand!!!

She is needing to travel back to her home of Japan to attend to some family issues pretty soon here,

and it's uncertain as to how long she will need to be in Japan at this point.

In reading about the I-131, it states "if you stay outside the United States for less than one year, you are not required to apply for a re-entry permit. You may re-enter on your permanent resident card."

Does this refer to being outside the U.S. for more than one year STRAIGHT?!

Or, does this mean one year total when adding up all separate trips during the 2 year "conditional" period of the permanent residence?

As in, say she was in Japan for 6 months this first visit, came back to the U.S. for 1 month, then back to Japan for 8 months, etc.

Would this be a violation and require the I-131,

or is it fine because each trip is less than 1 year at a time???

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL RESPONSES!!!

I WISH EVERYONE THE BEST OF LUCK WITH THEIR JOURNEYS!!!
