But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I am just surprised Naomi Watts would take a roll like that, Tim Roth too for that matter

SORT OF SPOILER WARNING

It's certainly not a movie for everyone (including me--I'm a wimp), but it's a clever, albeit disturbing, commentary on movie formulas, viewer expectations and manipulation, and the ubiquitous "family in peril" drama. If you take the typical horror or action movie formula, for example, viewers accept, and indeed expect, a lot of death (particularly of a few innocents to get the blood boiling), violence, destruction, cruelty, etc. As long as there's a formulaic payoff at the end and the bad guy(s) meets a gruesome demise, everything's cool. This movie blows apart that formula to expose something else altogether. This is particularly obvious in the part that's rewound and "deleted."

I'm not sure why the original was remade, tho. The English remake is, apparently, nearly line-for-line identical to the Austrian version.

Indeed--the two boys had to be creepy and loathsome. The viewer manipulation throughout is quite clever. The red herring involving the knife is sort of a parody of the foreshadowing in movies w/ a more traditional structure.

I refuse to watch "scary movies."

My wife watched "funny games" a few days ago and told me how it was disturbing, freaky, etc. She did, however, take the time to explain to me that sometimes women have intuition about things and in this movie, like in life, if the guy would've just listened to his wife and kicked the boys out when she said to do so, they would've been OK.

So, the lesson I took from her watching the movie was if I ever come home and she's freaking out because two weird young men are in our house I should immediately kick them out and listen to her, not questioning her judgement or trying to ascertain what's going on first.... just listen to her and do it!

The lesson she took from it is our shotgun is always ready to be pumped. Creepy guys usually leave once the "persuader" comes out.
