Establishing credit

Can we start establishing credit, once we have our EAD (and SSN)? Or do we need to be a green card holder or citizen for that?

And what is the best way, in this economy to start building up credit? Preferably, without a co-signer. I was told to get store credit cards, buy one item, pay it off, cut the card and get another one. What stores will allow me to get a credit card, with no credit? And do I need to have a job, because I'm a stay at home mom right now? I don't want to apply and get denied, and then lose credit.

Try goign to a department store such as Macy's, they may give you one with $200 or $300 on there. or Capitalone.com , they have cards on there that you pay a small amount as security and they give you credit. I did that, I paid $75 and they gave me a $300 limit, and then 6 months later they upped it to $2000

Were you working at the time?

Did you only have your EAD, or were you a green card holder at the time?

Nope, dont need any of that with a capital one card. IF you dont have an ead/or income, they will give you a secured card based on the amount you put down for a deposit

Does your husband already have a credit card? If so, he can request one for you; then use that credit card monthly, and after a few months, you might have some credit. All I know is that my mom had zero credit, so I added her as a card holder to my account. As the card had a low apr, i told her to buy some items, and pay most of the bill on time, and leave a balance; she did that for about 3 months, and then after that, she just continued using the card and paying all her bills on it. Eventually, she started to receive her own credit card offers, and she applied for a major one, and she got it.
