Discrimination? :(

I have to get this off my chest...

I went up to Vegas (1.5-2 hour drive) about 3 weeks ago on a job interview. I got the job, signed all the papers and everything and they told me to return 4 days later for my training. As I left the lady who interviewed me (and was gonna train me) asked me how long it took for us to get to Vegas from where we live. I told her about 2 hours. Then my husband and I left and went back home.

Four days later I'm on my way to Vegas for my training and the she calls me to tell me that she can't train me that day. She says "I don't have an appointment or anything, I just can't see you." that was her exact words. Then she asks me what day/s would be best for me to reschedule to, so I tell her that Mondays or Tuesdays work best for me. Then she tells me that she can only do Thursdays, so why ask what day/s are best for me? She then asks me if I wanna come out Tuesday the following week. So we decide on Tuesday the 28th at 11.00 am.

At this point I was a little annoyed, she must have known that I was already on my way to Vegas when she called me, why wait and call when it's less than 2 hours left 'til she was supposed to train me. We had already filled up the car with gas, got breakfast to go and was on our way. So in the middle of nowhere we turned around and went back home. What a waste of time, gas and money.

Next Tuesday comes around (yesterday). We fill up the car with gas, get some Starbucks so we'll wake up and we're on our way (again). Guess who calls at almost the exact same time again? And again she tells me she can't see me, and again way less than 2 hours before our scheduled training. So I told her not to set a new date for training and that I'm gonna find another job. Not that it sounded like she was going to anyway. She gave a really loud sigh of relief, changed her tone of voice to REALLY happy and relieved and sad "Ok, bye, bye" in a really cheerful way. So again we had to turn around and go back home.

I got the feeling that once they had hired me and realized (or a boss of the woman that interviewed me) that my work permit expires in December this year (not that I was trying to hide it or anything my EAD card was the first thing I presented them with at the interview) they didn't want me to work for them anymore. So why not tell me no at the job interview? And I did tell her that I had a Green Card Interview on Feb. 13th.

It felt like this was just their way of "getting rid of me" without a possible discrimination "problem".

Funny thing is I was half expecting them to call me yesterday again to say they couldn't see me. I just wish they would have had the decency to call me more than 1.5 hours in advance. I feel, in lack of a better word, used (or played).

During those 3 weeks I could have kept searching for jobs, somewhere where they are more serious about their employees. Now I just have to suck it up and start the job search over. Now that I think about it, I'm probably better of without them. They obviously didn't have any consideration for me or my time at all. I couldn't keep planning to go to Vegas for training only to keep getting calls on the way there that my training was cancelled.

I went home and googled the company, turns out that current and former employees has nothing good to say about them at all. Things like some weeks you'll work 0 hours and some 39 hours, no lunch brakes or any brakes for that matter and long hours, people who didn't get paid what they were supposed to and so on.

Is this common, to get hired and then just "bounced around"?

Has anyone else experienced something like this?

Is it just better to wait and apply for jobs once I have my green card?

Sincerely,

Jon & Jess

You could have called her (the day or hour) before you left your house to confirm your appointment, since it already happened on your first scheduled date.

Obviously the woman who is doing this has a problem. Maybe the whole company has a problem. When you feel good about doing it calmly, why not call her and ask her point-blank: Did something happen that I should know about??
