Speak whatever language you want-just make sure that you can speak a little English-if you live in the United States(I am not referring to you personally but to anyone who LIVES here). I don't think anyone expects a visitor or tourist to be able to speak English-but if you have lived here for a long time then learn the language.

How can you tell the difference between a tourist and an immigrant? How do you know who deserves courtesy, and who deserves a dirty look?

If they are wearing 'liberty bell" t-shirts thay are a tourist, if they have an attitude they must live here ;)

for the most part I could care less about tourists or immigrants-but I just think that if you live here(meaning the states) then you should make an effort to adapt. I don't expect people to know the words to our national anthem or anything-just basic english.

I went to their Website when this was reported last week and told them way to go and keep it up

Somehow mdyoung's comment doesn't surprise me.

Wasn't meant to surprise anyone. Have always said that individuals that come to this country to live should learn English and use it when outside the home. We do not need a tower of babel country.

If you screw up and take to long they tell you to get in the back of the line and they'll serve the next person--not kidding, I've seen it happen.

No soup for you. LOL

I have seen this sandwich shop on Food Network's show that's hosted by Jim O'Connor. He couldn't order correctly and was sent to the back of the line to try again. He got a local to help him out. And he's a born American.

They call the guys at Geno's the philly nazi, like the soup nazi in that Seinfeld episode.

Geno's was also shown in an episode of Ghost Hunters on SciFi. They said the hassle with ordering was well worth the sandwich. I thnk they also had a local help them out with tips on how to order correctly (beforehand)

**edit to add*

There's also a burger joint in Toronto called Johnny's Hamburgers. They're the Burger Nazis, similar thing, if you take too long to order, go to the back of the line and try again. They're always busy in there, with the line out the door into the parking lot, they don't have time for ums and ahs...you've stood in line for 10 minutes already, you should know what you want! ;)

This is a general pet peeve of mine...when people who have been waiting in line don't know what they want. For Heaven's sakes, you've had 10 minutes to make this decision and it's not life or death people.

I have worked in 2 McDonald's and I can tell you there's people that ask you what comes in an Extra Value Meal. Thank goodness I was able to finish school and get out of food service. The daily stupidity encountered has a tendency to kill brain cells.

Aha, my pet peeve.

The last time I went ballistic was at the local Immigration Office (in the US, mind you).

A big, big sign was sitting in front of the building. It looked quite impressive and I assume the message on there was quite important. Sadly enough, I could not read it - well, let's say, I could read it but not comprehend what the message was all about - because it was written solely IN SPANISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not one word of English.

That is just so, so very wrong. :o
