Obtaining a SSC... (in Indiana)

I just got my approval for the EAD, and now the next step is to get my SSC and driver license. I assume I need my SSC to get my driver license. Now I was just reading online about what documents I need to bring with me. It says:

Show us documents proving:

* Immigration status;

* Work eligibility;

* Age; and

* Identity.

To prove your U.S. immigration status, you must show us the current U.S. immigration document, I-94, Arrival/Departure Record, issued to you when you arrived in the United States. If you are an F-1 or M-1 student, you also must show us your I-20, Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status. If you are a J-1 or J-2 exchange visitor, you must show us your DS-2019, Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status.

I entered the country as tourist and my I-94 is expired. However I do have a valid passport and of course I will have the EAD card. How else can I prove my immigration status if my I-94 is expired?

We need to see a current document issued to you by the Department of

Homeland Security (DHS) showing your immigration status, such as Form I-551, I-94, I-688B, or

I-766. We CANNOT accept a receipt showing you applied for the document. If you are not

authorized to work in the U.S., we can issue you a Social Security card only if you need the number

for a valid nonwork reason. (See HOW TO COMPLETE THIS APPLICATION, Page 2, Item 3.)

Your card will be marked to show you cannot work. If you do work, we will notify DHS.

Many people apply for SSN using an EAD card, the EAD card proves that they are authorized to work.

I would bring Passport with visa, I-94 card, Marriage cert, EAD card.

Passport proves age, and is ID as well as EAD is ID.

Note: give USCIS 2 weeks or so after getting EAD card before applying for SSN, it takes this long for the immigrations status to be updated on the database used by SSA.

Note SSA uses a data base provided by USCIS to confirm immigrations status, you don't need to prove anything other than provide the EAD card.

To be assigned an SSN and issued a card, SSA needs to see the EAD card. You can't use the approval notice.

If you have one handy I would take the birth certificate (BC) in place of the passport. Even though a passport can be used as proof of age, the BC is the preferred proof.

Thanks guys!

I was reading and reading on it yesterday and I never paid attention to the form names mentioned. Apparently the I-766 is another name for EAD. So I should be fine! Thanks so much!
