Hi,

I want to move to the US to be with my boyfriend of almost two years. I am Canadian. Has anyone else gone through the moving process?

My current employer has offices in the states, and has informed me that a sponsorship through them MIGHT not be possible.

What other options do I have besides getting married? I want to marry him eventually, but don't want to marry just in order to get into the US.

Can anyone offer any information? I really appreciate anything at all.

Well really you only have 2 options - besides marriage. A work visa or going to the U.S. to study.

Yup, basically you have to get employer sponsorship, or get a student visa and pay to go to school there.

I felt the same way at the beginning - I knew I wanted to marry my USC BF, but not right away. We weren't even technically "engaged" yet! And when I found out we had to marry in 90 days, I said how on earth can I plan a wedding and save $$ in order for us to get married that quickly!! But the helpful peeps here on VJ explained alot to me and I figured well, if that is the only way for us to be together that's just fine. I knew we would get married anyway, so we just did it right away, us 2. We are planning our big wedding with family and friends for next year, and I came to accept that. It was just hard at the beggining thinking about getting married so soon, I wanted to plan the big wedding and do it a year after I arrived!! But it all worked out in the end and it will for you too! Good luck in whatever you decide!

We're all doing family/marriage based petitions here, so we're not super knowledgeable about other options than marriage/engagement.

So my advice on that end would be to tell him to sh!t or get off the pot and propose already. ;)

Hope you find something. Best of luck.

Lol! You always have the best way of describing things.

Wes and I were hoping there was some way to be together first, but other than me going down there to visit there wasn't much option...So just like Jill we decided we're going to make that leap, because we both know it would have happened eventually...he had told me if I came to visit for a few months that he would get married to me before I left so that I couldn't leave lol. (I think his other suggestion was something along the lines of locking me in the closet so no one would know I was there :D)
