2009 Tax Returns

Hey everybody,

We got married in August and getting ready to file taxes, i don't have my green card yet.

As i understand we have to submit a letter saying I want to be treated as resident, therefore we can't file electronically. My question is, has anyone prepared own taxes without any help? How difficult is it? I would appreciate any input.

2) Depends on your willingness to do the needed research... To read and understand a somewhat convuluted tax code

Yes, i'm definitely willing to do the necessary research. I don't know whetre to start though.

I can't (seem to) do my taxes any more without software (such as TaxAct, and the like) - might be a good way to start. Also H&R Block (and similar) will assist/prepare them for you.

Agreed, many tax sites (turbotax, taxslayer, etc..) will let you begin your return online for free.... This might give you ideas on the type of information you are required to have .......

But aparently you can't file online because of that letter u have to submit, i have to basically do everything on my own, print the forms out etc.

correct but it can be a guide.... otherwise your local library or bookstore will have guides you can use or purchase as well....

Using software/online-tax sites doesn't necessarily mean you have to file electronically - most/many offer this as an option, but it's not required.

and if we file on our own, how soon would we get a refund?

depends on many factors, a couple that come to mind include:

1) When you file... (the closer to April 15th, the longer it can take the IRS to process paper returns due to volume)

2) direct deposit or paper check

3) does the alien have SSN or ITIN

For a paper return, probably 4 weeks minimum but probably closer to 6

Just one more question, what if we file online without the letter or hubby files as single?
