Caterpillar to cut 20,000 jobs

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Caterpillar Inc said on Monday that quarterly earnings fell more than 32 percent and warned of a tough year ahead as the downturn that began in the United States metastasized into a full-blown global recession that hit sales of its earth-moving equipment.

The company also warned that profit in 2009 would be under severe pressure and said that it would cut about 17,000 workers and buy out 2,500 others, to reduce costs in the face of what it predicted would be the weakest year for business since the end of World War Two.

...

"We knew Caterpillar was going to be a disaster." said Eli Lustgarten, an analyst at Longbow Research. "We just didn't know the magnitude of it. And it's ugly."

Once GaryC loses his job, you can't expect him to return and rip Obama a new A-hole with renewed sense of purpose because now it's personal.

Made a typo. I meant to say "you can expect him. . ." It's not about "dissing" the man but how posters' liveihoods may be threatened due to the weakened economy and how people could get nastier in tone if things go from talking about the headlines to living them.

When is the fukcing bleeding going to stop? This is the only time in 8 years that I've been thankful for this C.D.L.. I'd be one of the last ones to be laid off and if they did I'd just go haul something else. We're still busy though and still hiring. People have not stopped coming to concerts and Broadway shows.....yet.

Son-in-law is an engineer working for Caterpillar, should I clear out a home for him and his family? We may all have to go back to the old fashion family way of living, is the oldest guy still in charge, or has that changed too?

You gotta do it caveman style, when the son-in-law moves in, beat him up, show him who's boss. Don't forget to thump your chest or the others won't bow to you.

Most of the layoffs have already occurred. I am relieved to say that I have survived. The word is that things will get worse in February with a leveling off starting after that. Although I am not bullet proof I am near the bottom of the list when lay-offs are considered. It usually takes 6 to 8 months to find someone that does what I do so they are in no hurry to get rid of me. The reality is this, when times are bad they need to keep what they have running rather than replacing equipment. Since I am sitting on the top of the tech pile they will do whatever it takes to retain myself and my fellow specialists. We had to reduce our workforce (at ATS, a contract maintenance company) by half. Not one of our specialists were laid off. I did, however, get moved to third shift because Cat closed 2nd shift. I am also senior to all but one of the specialists in my plant. They would have to go through 9 other specialists before they get to me.

And alien, there will be no comment about this or any other subject concerning Obama, regardless of what happens to me. Arguing on a immigration board about politics is a waste of time and I won't be doing that any more. Sorry.

Sorry to bring you out of retirement but since the layoffs were close to home for you, I was wondering if you'd come back with a vengeance if you unemployed.

I know I'm wasting my time but I'm addicted until there's another major change in my life or I just get tired of posting.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
