I've been reading in another immigration forum and just noticed a mistake I made on my N-400.

http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/N-400ins.pdf

11. Your Signature

After reading the statement in Part11, you must sign and date it. You should sign your full name without abbreviating it or using initials. Your application will be rejected if it is not signed.

Of course I read the instructions but when it was time to sign the document, I used my regular signature. This is full first name, middle initial and full last name. It's not the nicest handwriting but you can make out the name if you know it.

How did you sign your application? Am I the only one who used a middle initial? I have been fingerprinted, so is that a good sign? Or might my application still be rejected because of my signature? The longer I'm in the whole process and the more I read about it, the more nervous I get. Maybe you can give me some good news.

I signed with my usual signature (not my full name). When I got to my interview, the IO asked me to sign the 2 pictures I submitted. When I asked whether I should sign with my full name or my usual signature, she said to go ahead and use my usual signature.

When I got my naturalization certificate, I signed it the same way I signed my pictures so that my signatures are consistent.

Thank you for your reply. Now I feel a little better. I can't believe I forgot those instructions. On the other hand one would think you should use the signature you use all the time.

Please click the website below.. This will guide you as a newly naturalized citizen.

http://www.newcitizen.us/after.html

Thank you for that link.

Do I understand this correctly, even though I used my middle initial on my application, I should make sure that I sign my full name without any initials on my photographs and Certificate of Naturalization?

Just checking, since the IO seems to have encourage eau_xplain to use the same signature on all three items (application, pictures and certificate).

I wonder if it makes a difference then if you sign your passport the usual way.

passport is different.. you can sign your usual signature.

In the interview, the officer will tell you to sign your picture.. Make sure you sign in your full name and it will be same in the Naturalization certificate as per the link I gave you.

In the oath ceremony, they will give you a copy of Oath of Allegiance, maybe Flag sometimes, and an instruction how to sign the certificate.

I had someone that redo her certificate and apply for another certificate as she did not sign the certificate correctly as what the intructions indicated.

It depends to the officer in charge, but if I were you I will just follow the instruction.. Read first before you sign anything.

Thanks again for the info.

From now on I will sign everything related to the Naturalization with my full name. I just hope it's o.k. that I signed my initial application (#11. on the form) with full first middle, middle initial and full last name. I can't believe that I forgot those instructions. I doublechecked everything because I wanted to make sure I had done it right. But I guess I just totall forgot that anybody ever could tell you how to sign a document.

Wife doesn't like signing her full name, developed a very unique signature, doubt if I could even forge it to buy a new car or something, LOL. But got her to sign the N-400 the way they wanted her to sign it. Not even sure why, you have to sign it again in front of the IO at your interview, and that is after you read the oath aloud to the IO that doesn't count anyway as you have to go back and recite that oath again.

So even though she signed the application with her full name under severe penalty of law, it didn't count anyway as her IO went over every line with her on her application. She was asked three times if she ever committed a crime where she was never caught or arrested for. Then to have to sign the application again after reading the oath that didn't count anyway.

Now the really important piece of paper, her certificate, they didn't ask her to sign that at all, just gave it to her and said get out. At home, read where it says to sign her full name. Ha, wish they made her do that at the oath ceremony, she likes to give me a hard time on that, made her practice on a blank sheet of paper, and watched her carefully. Said it took us over five years to get that piece of paper, don't want to blow it now.

Only agencies that wanted to see it was the DOS and SS, in front of the DOS local agent, no problem in signing her full name, but I handled her SS and she signed that application with her artistic signature, they didn't say anything about it after glancing at her certificate.

I don't understand what the big deal is on this? While we were in Venezuela, just about every piece of paper she signed, had to put her fingerprint next to her artistic signature, how come we don't do that here?

Ha, how does one become a hand writing expert, see those guys in court. Lately our stores have a minimum wage high school kid wanting to see my CC after some really sloppy with many blank spots on attempting to write my signature on a piece of slippery glass, but they always say, okay. I think society has gone crazy.

I signed my full name, middle and last name although I have to checked my copy on how i signed it just to make sure I won't make any mistakes. I signed 4 or 5 different papers with that signature on my interview and it went fine. Although my GC, DL and passport have the same signatures which I prefer, it did not post any probs to the Officer. I just followed the directions on the form.

Usually when we sign we put the full name, middle initial and last name. But, the N-400 application says we must write our middle name without initial. I signed my complete name without any initial eventhough usually I write middle initial when I sign. Now its confusing that which way I have to sign at the interview.
