And whatever you do BRING YOUR DUVET WITH YOU!!!!!!!!

Yeah, what is with this "comforter" sh!t! I know they have some retarded words for stuff, but that's right up there with the most ghey.

I'm taking a king size duvet and duvet cover with me. I know american sizes will be different but everytime I need a new cover I'll just order one online. Tom had a comforter and it was a ####### to wash, due to the UK sized washing machines. I ended up washing it in the bath.

If your going to be anywhere near an Ikea store they have the same range of duvets as here:)

Charley fell in love with mine when he was visiting and has had one ever since.

I been in the US over three years and have looked everywhere for Duvets online and instore and they don't sell them in the US. Don't confuse US style Comforters for European style duvets they are nowhere near the same. If you make the mistake of not bringing one trust me you will regret it and end up doing as i did, getting them shipped in from the UK. Once again Ikea or anyone else in the US do not sell them so don't be fooled. One way to tell if it is a european style Duvet is to look for the tog rating if it doesn't have one then it is not the same.

Karen ( USA ) and Tony ( UK ) now both residing in USA!!

Aren't the things made of goose down or down alternative for people with allergies that you stuff inside the duvet cover acceptable for what you're looking for? We call two different things comforters here. One is just the white goose down thing in various warmth levels. And also the decorative fluffy thing all sewed up into bedspread that the cover doesn't come off of.

Here's Bed Bath and Beyond comforters, but if you look at the items, some (the white ones) are what I think you mean by duvet. Others are the bedpread type. I can't separate the search because they are both called comforters.

And here's their selection of duvet covers

And there's some duvet comforters here at Eddie Bauer

I may have the terminology all wrong but that's what I think a duvet is.

in the uk a duvet can be either made of down or man made fibers, it is all the same.

i just bought a comforter yesterday and i was a little confused by the thread count, we don't use that. we use a tog rating for the warmth levels...

why can't they be the same?

I think the difficulty of the transition may depend on where someone may be moving to in the US. I imagine that culturally the adjustment will be more difficult in parts of the South and small towns than it would be in a big city in the Northeast or West Coast.

I think the key to a successful transition is recognizing that things will be different - not necessaerily better or worse - but different.

Same as.

My mum isn't alive anymore and my dad is a cleaner, barely making enough to support his own household expenses. That means I don't get parental support like other students I know, there's no one to bail me out if I get into financial trouble. I don't really drink and I'm more of an "indoor girl" anyways so am careful with my money.. that being said, I can't escape the fact that I've needed to take out money to live on as well as the tuition fees. I plan on paying it back of course, but I just think £10,000 debt for a student is very minimal, unless talking about that on top of tuition and living fees.

You've done really well to manage...I know it can be hard. I'm very lucky to have motherly figures around, seeing as I didn't really have one. My close friend's mum has also told me that if I run into financial difficulties, she'll be happy to help me out, but I really don't want to do that. It really wouldn't feel right.

I hope you're able to manage with paying them back...as long as you can do that before the interest piles up, it should be okay. :: Hugs ::

I suppose I was pretty lucky with my debt as I went to a uni which was close enough to commute to, so I didn't have to pay rent. In addition, when I was at uni the yearly fees were a lot less than they are now, something like £1025 a year. I wish I had moved away though, it would have helped a bit with moving away from home.

I'm quite grateful that I didn't have to pay the full accommodation fees because I got the room in November. The student who had left had to pay fees up until the next person moved in, and I also get concessions on the cafeteria, and a free bus service to campus. I have to be careful about walking so when the busses aren't running, the security are happy to pick me up from here and drop me on campus, which is great of them. I love walking but Knight's not comfortable with me doing that, and I don't have a car anymore. But hey =D I can't really complain.

Magpie.

Macy's has proper duvets. Plus, if you go to their customer service area with your passport or UK driver's license they will give you a card for an extra 11% off any purchase. So if you buy your duvet at.... let's say 40% off..... then add in your additional 11% off, you get your duvet for less than half the price.

What is this mysterious Macy's British discount? Is it for anything or just duvets?

It's for any non-US citizen. Macy's has an unadvertised program whereby if you show them your foreign passport they will give you a discount card which you can use for pretty much everything..... not just duvets. The last time I used mine I bought my husband a pair of trousers which were 70% off, then took another 11% off with the discount card so I ended up paying something like $5 for them! :o

Yes, it used to be valid for a specific amount of time only. But the last time I went in there they told me to hang onto it because it was now valid forever. The rep said they were trying to reduce the amount of wasted paper so that's why they had done away with the expiry date. Yay.

I give up :help:

They are not the same. I have seen them all they are not the same. But feel free to buy one and once again ignore the numerous numbers of threads on VJ where people have been through all this before.

COMFORTERS and DUVETS are not the same and they DON"T have them in the US thats why americans don't have them on there beds and a duvet cover is not a duvet.

I think we know they are different and that duvets and duvet covers are not the same size in America and the UK. However if you buy them both from one country (which I am doing) then you are fine. And we already established you can buy them (duvets and duvet covers) in the US.
