Hello, we got our noa2 and can now schedule for an interview. I'm calling the embassy in manila on Monday to get a date but in the meantime have a couple of questions.

1. I read somewhere that my contact info is needed plus my SSN when she goes for her medical exam. Is this true? I mean, my SSN? With all of the problems with identity theft, it seems strange to me that it would be required at the medical exam.

2. My fiancee has two kids aged 11 and 12 yrs old. The last time they saw their father was probably when the oldest was 3 yrs old. What documentation is required for proof of sole custody? I don't even think they know where he lives to get his consent.

3. When I call to set up an interview date, I'll be looking for a date in March. I figure this gives us plenty of time for the medical exam, double check that we have all of the documents and maybe give me a little more time to get my w2's which I haven't gotten yet. If the interview is in March, will they require 2008 tax return? I can do the documents to show support now, it just won't have my taxes being up to date.

Thanks for all the help.

Magandang araw sa lahat at salamat sa tulong po!

Consulates and medical clinics differ by country, but if you are queasy about giving out your SSN during this process, better get over it. Manilla may require it, I do not know. Kiev did not. Alla only needed to give her KEV# and show her passport as ID.

You will need a court order of sole custody if you cannot find the father. In Ukraine this is not such a difficult thing to do but takes a month or two to obtain, if you want a March interview, you best get started on this one. The court order will have to be translated. I am not sure of the process in Phillipines, something tells me it will not be easier than in Ukraine. But that is what you will need.

Since our tax filing date is April 15, I do not think the consulate would require a 2008 return for a March interview, but would probably like to see a 2008 w-2. I would attach it anyway. The consulates (generally) consider "current" income as the first "qualifier". I know Kiev did not even look at my 2007 return because I easily documented "current" income and they never looked beyond that. Kiev is a remarkably "easy" consulate to deal with, though. I have not heard the same about Manilla.

Application goes to NVC and then to Manila. Sometime shortly before or after her paperwork gets to Manila, you can get her case number. When people get their case number varies. She now needs to start collecting all the documents she doesn't already have and she probably needs more pp size photos. She has her medical to finish and then, if she has all her documents completed, it is time to schedule the interview. Let a little time pass between her approved medical and the interview so the embassy has had time to receive her medical from St. Luke.

You are right, late March is probably about the time she will interview if everything goes according to what is normal.

Little things like getting custody paperwork can slow things down. I know there are posts here about custody. I forget what is necessary. I remember a woman going to her interview without the custody paperwork and they told her to get it. Her ex happened to be in the USA already petitioned by family in NJ.

Require it? They already have it... SSN is on the I-129F

Gary, thanks! I will ask her to get a court order or find the Father to ask permission. Somehow, I have a feeling this is not going to be easy :(

Thanks for your feedback on taxes. Makes sense.

DEDixon, we have a case number that starts with "MNL". I thought that in order for her to get her medical exam she needs an "appointment letter" showing her interview date? So this is not necessary? She can get her medical now? Can a letter from the Father saying he's allowing the kids to go be enough to replace custody papers? Thanks for your help!

Also my Fiancee doesn't speak english well, this shouldn't be a problem right? The interview can be held in tagalog?

I appreciate everyones help!!

:)

Yes, the interview can be in her native language.

My wife speaks English fairly well but she was offered, immediately, the option of English, Ukrainian or Russian for all her communications in the consulate. She chose Russian as it is her native language and did not want to make mistakes. The people at the embassy will speak both English and Tagalog (at a minimum). The person collecting the documents (we never really had an "interview" per se) spoke to her in Russian and then repeated everything to me in English. I thought it was very courteous of him. He spoke excellent English and my wife (a teacher of Russian language) said his Russian was "perfect".

The person collecting the documents was Ukrainian and we spent more time with him than anyone. The person conducting the interview was an American, but there really was no interview, he just gave back our original documents and told us to go arrange for delivery of the visa. My wife said his Russian was very good but "not perfect". :)

You are almost there and now you have to deal with the embassy. This is the place to post your experiences or questions related to this last step before moving to the US. Topics relating to I-134's, packets sent from consulate and medical & police certificates should be posted here.
