I speak English

The other half speaks American.

At work, you'd be surprised how many times the exact same phrase means something completely different here. I wonder how many Brits, working in technical jobs, where specialist terms are abundant, find the same thing?

Don't interrupt me when I'm talking to myself

Just curious of all the couples out there, who has learned the other's language? Which do you mostly speak, or do you speak a mixture? Do any couples out there have a hard time communicating, and if so how do you survive? What is your plan for raising children?

My fiance is Guatemalan and we speak Spanish, although a little bit of English is thrown in there at times. I was born and raised in the US, have no hispanic family (other than my soon-to-be-husband (L) ), learned Spanish in school (I actually teach Spanish at a local high school) and my first trip to a Spanish-speaking country was when I met my husband :P He does not speak much English but is attempting to learn, mostly from me, little by little. We plan on raising our children to be bilingual.

Just wondering how the other couples work it out - did the USC learn the foreign language, or did the alien learn English? Feel free to share stories!!

We speak Spanish.

We speak English at home my husband does not speak Spanish, he only knows the bad words and he has started to road rage in Spanish, sometimes its pretty funny.

Sometimes when I'm mad I speak in Spanish and his answer is always "No se! = I don't know!". We have had some trouble communicating due to the mistranslation, but patience is the key to survive.

We plan to raise our children to be bilingual.

I am English only. My wife speaks English, Tagalog, Pangasinan, Illocano. When she is angry or very tired it is a mix. I call it Tagalish. She has taught me a few words. Most of them bad, that way I have no doubts when I am in trouble, again!!!

Thats funny John...TAGALISH! I know when my wife is mad at me also. She gets real quiet and does not

say a word for about 5 to 10 minutes...maybe that is called "Tampo"? although from what I have read, if that

is how she is acting, it is mild.

The quiet has variable degrees, depending on what the Tampo is for!!

my husband is fluent in english but his native tongue is arabic. So we communicate in english

I can say a the basics in arabic(i love you,how are you ect ect) and some conversational spanish, i should speak spanish more fluently after 19 years in so cal and 4 years n school, but if you dont use it, you lose it for sure

my 5 year old knows many phrases in arabic and spanish. want him to become fluent in arabic and our future kids will speak both as well, god willing :D

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

We speak mostly English together, with some occasional Mandarin words and phrases thrown in (Mandarenglish?). I am fluent only in English. She is fluent in Mandarin and near fluent in English. She also knows a bit of Russian and Japanese. I'm hoping she will be able to teach me more Mandarin when we have more time together.

If we have children they will be bilingual.
