Hello dear Vjs!

I have a question, important question. Once you have the GC in hand, can you leave the US for a little while to go back to your home country, work there for a while, and then go back to the US?

See, at the end of the year, my husband's contract is ending. So, we are thinking to go live in France for a few months, because he really wants to learn my language and that would be the easiest way to do it...

How long can you live the US as a GC holder without having any troubles to get back in the US?

Are you allowed to work in your home country? I mean, a friend of mine told me the US don't allow permanent residents to go back to their home country in order to work a little and then go back to the US?!! It sounds crazy to me, but nothing would surprise me coming from the US rules...

Oh yes, and I also heard that the last day Bush was in office, he passed a law stating that permanent residents who leave the US, either for travel, or anything else, won't be consider with a special status when they want to go back to the US, but will be considered like immigrants at the customs and could be potentially denied or have troubles?? #######????!!

So if anybody has any ideas about these questions, please help!!

01/12/2009: EAD received!! Finally

02/09/2009: GC received in the mail :) Anniversary is 01/29/11

Removal of conditions:

11/09/10: Divorced

11/18/10: Sent I-751 to CSV

11/30/10: Receipt notice received in the mail

12/30/10: Called USCIS as no news for 1 month after NOA1

1/10/11: Emailed from USCIS about my call: "The process for fingerprint appointment scheduling has been requested."

1/13/11: NOA2 ASC appointment notice

2/3/11: Biometrics at local office (NOA2 recieved on 2/2/11!!!)

2/16/11: Date of decision: APPROVED

2/24/11: Card in hand

why would you apply for residency on the US...

and then leave the US to go back to your home country...??

anyways..

I think you once you have a your green card you can leave the US for a small period of time... I think a year max...

not really sure tho..

Thanks for that. Well, as I said, we'd like to spend only a few months in France so that my husband can learn French a little bit, he really wants to do it, and then we'll come back to the US.

Anyway, anybody knows the exact rules??

Google "maintaining permanent resident status" for all the information you could possibly digest on the subject. Yes you can leave for a few months without a problem but do research the requirements more thoroughly.
