I am going to be a co-sponser in a Affidavit of Support for my best friend.

But I am currently married which is no big deal. But since i have to show my taxes, i was thinking about filing seperate to make it simple cause i am the co-sponser, not my husband.

Is it better to file seperate? Or if I file a joint tax with my husband, will i have to put that info on the forms as well?

Thanks to you all!!!

Cheers,

Jennifer

You do not have to file taxes separate from your husband just for the reason that you are going to be a co-sponsor. You can submit copies of your joint tax returns, but you fill in and sign the I-134 with your information ONLY since you are co-sponsoring based on YOUR INCOME, not the combined income of you and your husband. It is also best to include your W-2's along with the copies of the joint tax returns.

Yes, a married joint sponsor should use tax returns instead of tax transcripts so the W2's and/or 1099 forms can be used to reconcile the individual's income with that stated on the affidavit of support. Just state your personal income, not the joint total.
