At first my relationship with my USC in-laws was erm.... Difficult! My wife and I have a sizable age-gap which they seemed to find somehow offensive and the phrase "why can't you marry an American for once" was spoken (her previous husband was Mexican) along with some other utterly indefensible slurs that they made about me, which I won't repeat here. That said, once I came here for a second 3-month visit (just prior to K1 filing) they did start to chill out and realise that I'm not all bad and that we are indeed made for each other. Today we get along well. I've had to put some of the things that were said about me out of my mind to get there though. If they weren't my in-laws, they would have been the last words they spoke to me but I got my apology (of sorts, eventually) so in the interests of moving on and family diplomacy, all of that is now in the past.

Like I said, two years down the line, I get along well with most of my wife's family, which just goes to show that even big chasms with the in-laws can be crossed over time if they can just realise that you're happy together and good for one another.

That said, I do wish they'd give us a little more warning before just "dropping by to see how you're doing"

My husband and my parents actually met in person after he arrived. They had spoken on the phone a few times and passed emails back and mom learned to chat via yahoo messenger. He called my parents on the phone for their permission to ask me to marry him. I would say now their relationship is ok. My dad thinks my husband is very stubborn which he is. But I think a lot of it is that my dad mumbles to himself and has an accent that he tells my husband something and he thinks he knows what he is saying...on the other hand my husband doesn't ask for clarification. Mom some times likes to stir the pot and get stuff going like putting ideas in others heads. Other times she is ok.

As far as me and my in laws go. My father in law passed away before I met him. I had spoken to him many times on the phone and he seemed likea wonderful man. I regret not having a more personal relationship with him. My mother in law speaks no English but hello. She normally holds my hands and looks into my eyes like she is trying to tell me something and hugs and kisses me. She seems to be a sweet person and I hope to one day really get to know her.

I met the in-laws a week after I met my hubby for the first time. I was terrified, especially to spend Christmas with them. But they were extremely nice and we all liked each other. I am fortunate that they consider me like their daughter. :)

My husband and my parents...oh boy, where to begin. They met my husband when we were dating. My parents do not speak more than 10 words of English and my hubby didn't speak any French at the time. My parents kept assuming stuff and my hubby kept being frustrated with my parents. Culture shock, anyone?

Now, their opinions of my husband are finally great. And my hubby forgave them for all the bad things they did!

So all is well, it just took about three years lol!

AOS Approved on 10-17-08 (details in profile)

Removal of Conditions on 07-19-10

In this tedious process, we tend to forget that this is all worth it.

I love my hubby beyond anything in this world.
