actually, that failure has been attributed to poor engineering in regard to the gussets used to stabilise the shape of the span girder beams. the engineering firm that did the work had sub-contracted that segment of the analysis to some indian firm...

An indian firm in the 1960s? Really? Funny, that's not mentioned in any of the NTSB reports. Shouldn't the fine white folks at Svedrup & Parcel caught the mistake?

a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

the bridge in question had been completely "re-engineered" 3 times since it's construction, in consideration of the increased traffic flow and degraded conditions. in each case the bridge had been found serviceable. this kind of thing goes on all the time, with increasing frequency as bridges across the country approach and exceed designed service function or lifespan. there was a big write-up on this bridge failure in the AWS Welding Journal last month, and one earlier in the AWS Inspection Times. a little too technical for most people to understand, so what you will see in the popular press is the "cliff's notes" version.

in layman's terms, the bridge was "re-engineered" just prior to the repair work which precipitated the collapse. the "re-engineering" that was done was specific in consideration of the stability of the bridge during the intended repair. unfortunately the re-engineering was inadequate. removing the deck in certain sections for the repair reduced the lateral strength of the beams in the construction area. the beams buckled under compressive stress and the entire stack of dominoes began to fall. the gussets in the webs of the span girders were determined to be the weak point in the design under the conditions of the repair work. the indian firm that had been contracted to analyse the gusset connections failed to consider all variables in their calculation. it's history, now.
