"Benjamin Button" leads Oscar nominees

Thu Jan 22, 2009 6:24pm GMT Email | Print | Share| Single Page[-] Text [+]

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The high-profile Brad Pitt drama "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and the low-budget Indian saga "Slumdog Millionaire" led the field of Oscar contenders on Thursday, while Heath Ledger became only the sixth actor to get a posthumous nomination.

"Benjamin Button," for which Pitt earned a nod as best actor for playing a man who ages backward, had 13 nominations in all -- one short of the record shared by "All About Eve" (1959) and "Titanic" (1997).

"Slumdog Millionaire," the tale of an impoverished orphan's improbable victory on India's version of the game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," followed with 10 nominations.

As expected, Ledger was nominated for his supporting role as the villainous Joker in the hit Batman movie "The Dark Knight," which collected eight nominations to tie with the gay-rights story "Milk."

Ledger is easily the favourite to take the prize at the 81st annual Academy Awards on February 22. The Australian actor died of an accidental overdose of prescription pills exactly a year ago, at the age of 28.

To date, the only performer to win posthumously has been Peter Finch, who was honoured for 1976's "Network" about two months after his fatal heart attack.

"Benjamin Button," "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Milk" will vie for best picture alongside a pair of movies that claimed five nominations each -- post-Holocaust love story "The Reader" and the political-media drama "Frost/Nixon." In a rare match-up, all five also got best director nominations.

Clint Eastwood's recent box office champ "Gran Torino" was notably snubbed, with no nominations. Another high-profile omission was Bruce Springsteen, who won a Golden Globe earlier this month for writing the theme song for "The Wrestler." Continued...

There haven't been too many memorable films this year. I liked Dark Knight (and the Ledger thing is a bit of a gimme - perhaps unfairly considering how little he actually features in the film).

I'm just glad Daniel Day Lewis won last year for There Will Be Blood - a fantastic performance.

I still have not seen that movie, or any of the films that are being considered for an Oscar this year, except Dark Knight. So many I want to see...waiting for them to come out on cable.

Well,

I've watched some of Rourke's old 80's movies and at first I thought he was another Tom Cruise but MAN! that guy is f'ing good! I watched the Wrestler online and even though the damn definition sucked, I still was amazed of his performance, he is not longer a pretty face. Cruise, Pitt, etc are successful only because of their look, Rourke is all screwed up because of plastic surgery and still f'ing rocks.

What's the story about his plastic surgery? I read where supposedly he went under the knife after 5 yrs. of boxing, but if recall correctly, he's face started looking altered back when he did Wild Orchid.

BS, the guy didn't look that bad when he was boxing. He just wanted to get a lift and failed, too bad, his expressions were really good and added to his performance; watch the Year of the Dragon if you can, I recommend it but doesn't top the Wrestler.

I'm trying to find Angel Heart but so far it's rented on Blockbuster Online :(

Angel Heart! That's the one that left the biggest impression on me. Maybe it was because I saw the unedited version, which showed Rourke going at Lisa Bonet like a piston. I couldn't believe what I saw so I kept rewinding and watching it over and over...back in the VHS days.

Claudeth and I never go to theaters to see movings. I think the last movie we saw as Spiderman III. We will make up our minds in a few months when they all come on HBO or Showtime :P We certainly did enjoy 'No Country for Old Men' but didn't get the Juno thingy. Ah yes, it is good to be behind the times

I really think Heath deserves the nomination for the Oscar.... not sure if he should win or not because I haven't really seen the other movies in his category...

he was amazing as the Joker.. yeah he pwned Nicholson hundred times over...

well that is why he was nominated for best supporting actor and not best actor..

TBH, most of the movies I've seen him in, he just came across as creepy. He did a good job in Sin City though. I'll have to see his latest movie.
