Proposing tommorow! - Help needed

Hi all,

I leave Gatwick tommorow morning, to see my SO, got the ring, got the courage (eek) and am really looking forward to it.

Thing is this......

I was in the states mid feb to see her, and im going back now. I got a real hard time at immigration (o'Hare) and this time I am going to Dallas Fort Worth, before heading to Portland. I have been told that Dallas are notoriously strict with immigration. Last time, I said I was seeing family friends, I am planning on doing the same this time.

Any tips? Any advice? Anything I should expect? Im going for 19 days, there is no way im planning to do a runner lol.

First of all, congrats!

Second, well hmm...there's no guarantees of course but the best you can do is go prepared to give them all the evidence you can that you'll be heading home.

My fiance escorted me home from the UK after my six month visit. He was honest and said he was coming home with me for a 10 day stay then he was leaving. He had a letter from his employer showing he was due back at work on Feb. xx and he also had his return ticket. I'd also take some 'ties' like a mortgage, car insurance contract, lease on flat, etc. Show that you have a life you're going to have to return to. Other than that just be calm and try to answer clearly and relaxed. Just from reading horror stories of denials it seems the more nervous you are the more suspicous they become.

No experience really but I have read plety of replies on here....

Possibly bring some evidence of return. ie...a work holiday form, or maybe a car payment book, or a letter from your employer that states when you will return to work from your holiday. I don't think you will have any problems as we haven't had any yet. But it is always better to the safe then sorry.

Its too late to get anything from my employers. I have my itenary stating when I am coming back etc. I just really hate lying, and am worried that I am coming back so soon. Im sure it will show up on the computer that I was over three months ago.

Im more nervous about immigration than proposing how messed up is that!

All I would say is be ready in case she says NO... I think thats the bigger problem I would worry about....

Well if it's any help, he left on something like Feb. 18 and was back in mid-April. Again he just had the employment letter and return ticket and told them why he was visiting and for how long and that YES I'M LEAVING. I'm sure when they scan the visa it pulls up when you were there last but if you didn't stay for a large chunk of time I don't think it hurts.

When you break it right down it all just depends on the officer you get.

That's the best policy with CBP/Customs & Border Patrol.

I went to California through Houston (not Dallas, but close ) over Xmas to meet my fiance's family, after having visited him in Portland in October, so i was a bit nervous as well, but I was very straight forward, when they asked, I told them i was meeting my boyfriend's family and showed them my return ticket itinerary, and that was all.

But to play it safe, bring your house rent contract or something that shows you live in the UK.

Now I see the ring, am more concerned she will say no. The ring looks too expensive and some women dont like that......

i went through DFW in march 05 without a prob and then again in march 06 without a problem. I said i was visiting friends and they asked how long i had known them and where we became friends. nothing too crazy and Ive been asked more at SFO over 6 years of trips before

also going back at the end of june for 10 days, not taking any extra info (contract employed anyway) and im not too worried about it. I was only there for 2 weeks back in march, i expect a little questioning but nothing too crazy. the people i see who were barred went for the full 90 days and then came back and tried to do the same thing very quickly.

edit: try not to be too worried, they could pick up on it! just try and relax, your not doing anything wrong and chances are you will get through fine
