whoa...............hold the phone.............I never thought about the casing from hot dogs. We buy "beef" hotdogs since the "meat" ones have pork in them but never does the label mention the casing.

When I cook turkey or chicken sausages I always peel the casing off and then cook them. Royal pain in the ####### but it clearly states on the label that it's pork casing.

Are you sure hot dog casings are pork? My husband will freak if I tell him that!!! He's not picky either, he just says bismillah before eating any meat (or anything else for that matter) but if something blatently says pork there's really no excuse. UGH now I'm going to have to call the market that I get them from. :crying:

You can check - I only buy Kosher hot dogs for the kids, and I think oscar meyer turkey hot dogs have non-pork casing. Always best to double check. I've considered peeling the casing off but husband won't eat them if the pork's been touching the meat and "soaking" in as he says LOL

When I used to eat non zabiha, I was uber excited to find Jennie O turkey sausage and turkey brats. Alas, they have pork casings. It should say right on the ingredients, but if you get them from a butcher, then it's best to ask.

Sadly yes, you really need to read the labels - almost all gummi candy has gelatin, marshmallows, etc. Most chocolates do not but I was surprised about Junior Mints - I used to love to eat those at the movies :crying: Also a lot of yogurt has gelatin in it, including most Dannon brands.

I love Junior Mints. I eat a yogurt every morning. My store brand yogurt lists the gelatin as Kosher Gelatin. So I hope I'm still safe. What do you think?

Kosher gelatin can be made from the skin/hooves of cows, as well as from fish bones. It's not Halal if it's not slaughtered properly, is it?

Depends on how strict you are with eating things slaughtered only halal-ly (not a word i don't think). For me and my family as long as it's not pork it's fine. We say bismillah before eating it and call it good. This would be interesting to see what the yogurt in the ME are made of. -- Also gelatin made from fish is considered halal, there are no dietary restrictions on fish or fish products (aside from the blood) as far as I know. We often buy halal marshmallows that are made with fish gelatin.

I dont know if this is topic related but I've become addicted to the Pringles Stix pizza flavored & always stash a few packs with me to snack on. My husband loves pizza so I sent him a box a few months ago to try to them -it was a hit with him and his family. On my most recent trip to visit him I bring them out & he says "Oh I like the cheese flavor in those. I read the ingredients and they have cheese in them."

For some reason, I was surprised he did this considering he never reads the things I ask him to & I told him I never read the ingredients and when I did - PORK EXTRACT.

I felt awful & couldn't apologize enough, I was never really a label reader other than to quickly check calories, sodium, fat and sugars.
