Mom calls FBI and lies about her son wanting to kill Obama

After taking the extraordinary step of closing a 25-mile stretch of the New Jersey turnpike Tuesday because of a tip about a man headed to Washington threatening the inaugural, authorities now say the situation was a false alarm.

Officials say the tip came from the man's mother.

"There was an investigation by New Jersey State Police and the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force that resulted in the New Jersey turnpike being shut down for a short period of time," FBI spokesman J.J. Klaver told CNN. But after finishing its investigation, the FBI said "there is no danger to the public."

New Jersey State Police stopped a man in a vehicle on the highway Tuesday afternoon after a lookout alert was issued, questioned the man and searched his vehicle, several law enforcement sources say.

Now officials say they don't believe he ever posed a threat.

"There is nothing to it," one law enforcement official told CNN.

Two law enforcement sources said the man's mother phoned in a tip to authorities saying her son was traveling in a vehicle containing a bomb and posed some type of threat against the inauguration.

It's unclear what, if any, action might be taken against the mother.

Acting out of caution, authorities decided to close a 25-mile portion of the turnpike, believing the man was traveling through New Jersey to Washington with explosives.

The sources would not speak on the record because they were not authorized to speak publicly about this investigation.

The man taken into custody, said to be in his mid-20s, is from the Boston area, the sources tell CNN.
