New Telephone scam???

I got a strange phone call about 2 am today. A woman with an Indian or Pakistani accent claiming to be from Bank of America telling me that my credit card had been declined. She told me this twice, then said thank you and hung up.

The only BoA credit card I have is my Government Travel Card, and I've checked with them and there's no problem. I also called BoA consumer credit and verified that no one has applied with my SSN based on the possibility that it was a legitimate call from BoA telling me that they'd turned down an application because of the fraud alert I placed with the credit services after the VA theft. It was not.

Has anyone else received a call like this, or know someone who has? I'm wondering if it's some kind of scam where they try to get you angry and then trick you into verifying personal information, but since I was so sleepy they gave up?

Anyone?

Never had this happen. Just never give out your info on a cold for starters.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

No bank will call you at 2:00 am to tell you about a declined credit card. That's BS right there.

its a SCAM.

if she was REAL :

1st. she would have called you at a decent time

2.. she would have given YOU information, and left you with some kind transaction code.

they dont call and say - transaction declined. they would call to tell you someone stole the card number.

That's not necessarily true. When I was abroad, my bank's fraud department

called me to confirm the transactions I had made that same day that they thought

looked suspicious (presumably because they were foreign.)

This is true. When I went to Egypt I was using my cell phone all along the way. When I reached Egypt I called back home and my parents said my cell phone company had called them in the wee hours of the monring to verify that I was traveling abroad. When I had initally set up my service with them I had used my parents number as a back-up contact. Some companies do work after hours.

It was a scam. I work for a regional bank base in New Orleans. We never call people to informed them they have been denied a credit card. Most bank, according to the Federal Trade Comm., will sent you a letter stating the reason you was denied a credit card and how to file an appeal if you feel like the information that was supply to the bank was not correct.

If someone was using a credit card and the card was declined, the place you was using the card at would tell you the reason, i.e over the credit limit, no payment received. did not have permission to use card or tell you that you need to contact the credit card company.

The bank's fraud department will call you if they see a credit purhcase(s) that seems out of the normal but they are not going to call at 2 a.m.

uhhh.... duh.... what is the scam exactly ???? To call you up late and wake you up ??? How does that benefit them? Generally when you scam someone it is best to at least collect personal information!

You definitly have some sort of issue here. Perhaps your number was stolen and tried to be used overseas. Anyway, call your credit card issuer if you haven't already. Tell them what happened.

K1 Visa Process long ago and far away...

02/09/06 - NOA1 date

12/17/06 - Married!

AOS Process a fading memory...

01/31/07 - Mailed AOS/EAD package for Olga and Anya

06/01/07 - Green card arrived in mail

Removing Conditions

03/02/09 - Mailed I-751 package (CSC)

03/06/09 - Check cashed

03/10/09 - Recieved Olga's NOA1

03/28/09 - Olga did biometrics

05/11/09 - Anya recieved NOA1 (took a call to USCIS to take care of it, oddly, they were helpful)

That's the rub. She did have at least my first name, but that's also in the phone book.

She gather any personal information from you ? She just made that statement? Then she had nothing to gain I would think.

Only information she got from me was "Huh? What??"

Have talked to the credit card company, no charges or attempted charges on my current card, and no declined new applications in my name.

Obviously it was a bogus call, but I'm really trying to figure out what the point was. I don't understand how it profitted them. Did a lot of searching on the internet yesterday, could not find anything similar.
