Say hi to NEVER COME BACK for me!!

I heard that some in the crowd started chanting this as Bush came out on stage.

*Certainly Barack will inherit this same level of disrespect / hate, as the cycle continues.

When's the last time we had any President for 2 terms who didn't?

There is visceral, violent, hatred among large sections of the population for GWB, Clinton and Reagan. Anything before that I can't speak to.

But I'm not aware of any similar hatred for Carter or GHWB. Carter is disliked but not with the same level emotional depth Clinton is.

So it comes down to whether Obama gets a 2nd term!

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

I think I saw on the news that he hurt his back lifting something. I feel so sorry for that guy sometimes. :hehe:

Who cares.

Its just words.

I guess 1 million 400 people that showed up cared..

I think some perspective is called for here - it was just a frigging speech.

Speeches are all well and good - but they don't fix the economy, the healthcare system, or end the war in Iraq.

Perhaps some people do think that spending $150 million on feel-good symbolism is worthwhile. I get the symbolism (I really do), but I find it very hard to find a justification for spending that kind of money on a glitzy show when the country is up ####### creek.

Actually, a good speech can change a lot of things. A good speech can move the heart, the soul and give one hope.

In this climate it is what a lot of this country needs. They've been incredibly let down and lied to over the past 8 years.

You shouldn't be so dismissive. Words DO have immense power.

They do when said in the right place, at the right time, by the right person.

In most cases though - its a crapshoot, and slick speeches are pretty par for the course in politics.

Tony Blair got into Number 10 through rhetoric (Blair was all about "New Dawns" if I remember rightly), in much the same way that Obama seems to have been elected on the back of his "Change" message (which I still find appallingly naive) and the massive resentment towards Bush.

Yeah he lifted a box during the move, has to spend 2 days in the chair. I heard it was a shoe box, but confirmation of those reports are yet to be confirmed!

Well, if the Inauguration isn't the right time for a slick speech, when is? :D

And I hated Tony Blair. Although I can see similarities between the two of them, and what they promise, I do think that personality wise they differ quite substantially. I can't see Obama being a lap dog to anyone.

I don't dispute that - I just find it hard to take inspiration from an event where the inspiration is expected and assumed.

Perhaps I just object to the way that this country does its political business - with massive fanfares and celebration. It all seems very contrived.

"...because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace."

Well, they don't have a Royal Family, so I say let them have the huge inauguration! :D

Well I didn't get to see all of the speech, but I did get the chance to see him take the oath....I think he was a little nervous as he messed it up a few times, by cutting off the person giving the oath and having to have a part of it repeated to him as he couldn't recite it. I have seen him speak in other times, and he is a very good speaker I just hope he will be able to deliver on his promises even during this tough situtation he is inheriting.
