I don't know much about Kennedy (though I know "of" him certainly), so I'm not sure why you feel you need to up the ante by laughing at the man's cancer. Kennedy doesn't mean much to me, Cheney doesn't either for that matter. I guess I'm just not the sort of guy who'd wish a terminal illness on someone. That $hit is just sick dude.

Cheney in a wheelchair is the last laugh of an administration characterized by war and goofiness. The only thing missing was bush slipping on a banana peel.

It doesn't surprised me how bitter and angry people are toward the Bush administration even on a day they should be happy. Will we all have a good chuckle when when Biden has a stroke or something happens to Obama?

Obama's administration is already characterized by war and goofy comparisons to past presidents bordering on pantheism. Obama's slipping on the oath has already been explained away. If that had been Bush it would be material for the late night comics for a week.

Obama's administration is... what... a day old? They aren't characterised by much of anything as far as setting policy goes - save of course for the fact that they've just inherited an ailing economy and two expensive wars.

As far as neener neener "I-say-something-about-Bush-so-you-must-automatically-retaliate-against-Obama" stuff goes - I should probably underline the fact that I don't have any particular feeling toward Obama beyond the simple fact that he isn't George Bush. I've already said elsewhere (on many occasions in fact) that I'm rather skeptical of Obama's polished (but rather empty) rhetoric and how his words take on a life of their own and why some people have bought into this idea of hope and change when they really have little reason to.

I've seen much the same thing from the likes of Tony Blair (and most recently - Nicolas Sarkozy of France) - Blair promised to radically transform the UK and take it out of the doldrums that the post-Thatcher tories had condemned it to. In the end he failed to do much except tie the UK to Bush's wars (against massive public opposition) implement huge across the board tax increases (Gordon Brown being the closest that "New Labour" has to an "Old Labour" socialist) and employing an army of spin doctors to dress up the government's public image.

I derided Blair, John Major before that, and Margaret Thatcher before that, so surely consistency demands that I should slam Bush as well - for his many demonstrative failures. Of course I'm not particularly invested in the silly partisan mudslinging that seems part and parcel of US politics (as I wasn't into the Tory Vs. Labour mudslinging in the UK). I don't know why you're unable to be honest with yourself and just admit that the Bush administration has been an absolute disaster for this country in many ways (and that just perhaps that this has something to do with Obama's appeal) rather than trying to defending it out of some misguided sense of partisan loyalty..

Of course people don't learn from their mistakes - if they did they wouldn't be so quick to run from one politician to another, and be more discriminating in their trust rather than simply buying into yet another set lofty promises and high sounding rhetoric.

Well everyone should have a chance I think - obviously Obama hasn't done much to validate his pre-election claims and we'll see over the next 4-8 years whether or not he's able to succeed.

I'm quite serious. I didn't really criticise George Bush until he decided to go into Iraq. Wasn't here when Clinton was President - so I have little context for him, but I was pretty critical of a number of his administration's foreign policies.

I've gone over where I differ with Bush on more than one occasion on the Iraq War and big spending for starters. I've been politically aware for the last 28 years and have seen different parties and presidents at work. The idea of a two dimensional image of Bush and Obama with one at the extreme of imcompetence than the other at some grasping at lofty hopes isn't insightful. I was the only apologist in the Army for Clinton that I knew of and it hones your thinking to defend the guy who's the underdog than to go side with the sheep baaing the same slogans. Falling back on your experiences with British politics makes me think you don't have a lot of first-hand experience with other U.S. presidents but I could be wrong. America is one the few (if only) developed nations where the foreigners and immigrants think they know more than the natives. Must be the international coverage of the U.S. In any case, I've heard most of it before but we do need people like you and others as new blood to make this country more flexible to survive as a competitive nation and not one talking about some lost golden age.

You're right - I don't. My only experience of Clinton (and Bush Sr.) was solely in regards to their overseas policy. I didn't follow the domestic ins and outs of those administrations as I wasn't living in the US at the time and had no need to (after all that's what the UK government was for).
