Hello my loveliessss.

Since some of us are often using British slang in our normal conversations here, I thought we should straighten out what some of these things mean.

Krikit...I ask you to take the floor please.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

I hope you will be using the British version (I might be able to get behind that - it's my favorite)!

I thought maybe you wouldn't know it was me with my nifty disguise

Ahem. *clears throat*

Is this thing on? *taps mike*

Sybillance.

Sybillance.

Okay. It's on.

Welcome, everyone, to the British Expressions/Words Canadians Use thread. I would like to thank you all for coming, and to extend my deep and everlasting gratitude to Treble for the time and effort she has put into this very important and oh-so-worthwhile endeavour. Thank you, Treble. *looks at Treble and claps*

Today's lesson is "dickie bird". As in "I haven't heard a dickie bird." Meaning "I haven't heard a word." Bird = word.

It's cockney rhyming slang. A "Cockney" is a person from the east end of London. The slang was developed as a way to obscure the meaning of sentences..... probably for criminal activities..... or maybe they just liked to be different.

And so ends today's lesson. There will be a test at the end of the week. :hehe:

Nice one, Krikit.

I shall add to today's lesson. My first two examples are as follows:

a) "It's up the apples and pears to your right..." (apples + pears = stairs)

b )"I have done fanny adams today..." (I have done *uck all today)

c) You're taking the mick! (You are making fun of me)

d) It's pissing right down (It's raining)

e) Calling someone "pet", while may be regional, is affectionate.

f) "I'm compelely knackered"-Tired

g) "We got well leathered" - We got really drunk.

h) "ta" or "toura"- goodbye...mostly used in the North

i) He went out on the pull - He went to try to pick up the ladies

j) That is a lovely lookin bird you've got -Nice looking girl

More to come...

You get a gold star! Monty Python is Boss!

When I was dating a Mancunian, he would address me as "bishop" all the time.

"Alrigh' Bishoppp?"

I thought it was the weirdest thing.

Also, a sarnie is a sammich.
