My experience;

For the most bang-for-the-buck, find the smallest charity organizations, and work through them.

In an exceptional case of waste,

Our local (and other)"United Way" organization was paying to local leader several million in pay and perks.

i used to be a volunteer ESL teacher in the Bronx. and used volunteer to counsel elementary school kids in Washington Heights. if, we ever move back to Jersey, i think i'd like to volunteer at Habitat for Humanity... i like the idea of a tool belt and hammer.

I do volunteer with an organization called Portlight.org, its a small grassroots organization that is growing..if anyone wants to check it out!

They do alot of hurricane relief, I did a toy drive at work to send toys for a Christmas party for the Hurricane Ike victims, I also volunteered with the St. Bernard Project doing rebuilding in New Orleans. Their creator won CNN Hero of the year too. I'ts been some of the best and most rewarding things I've ever done.

I courier emergency blood for the American Red Cross.

When a hospital needs blood urgently the Red Cross calls one of the volunteer couriers and we take it straight away.

I donated children's toys, and then helped distribute these toys in a poor section of Tijuana, Mexico on January the 4th.

At home, I edited the video that I shot during that day, and the video is now posted on YouTube. One of the boys who received a bicycle was overheard saying, "This is the first gift I have ever received." This boy was about 14 yrs. old.

Whether you work full time or not...everyone has a little time, even once a month that they could donate.

I volunteer with shelters and programs for victims of domestic violence. Have done that since 1998 and I love it.

When I see the light coming back into those women's eyes, I know it all counts and sometimes just being there helps.
