Obama honors McCain

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President-elect Barack Obama called his former Republican presidential rival, Sen. John McCain, a hero at a bipartisan dinner Monday night and encouraged politicians to reach across the aisle.

"I could stand here and recite the long list of John's bipartisan accomplishments ..." Obama said. "Campaign finance reform. Immigration. The Patients' Bill of Rights. All those times he has crossed the aisle and risked the ire of his party for the good of his country. And yet, what makes John such a rare and courageous public servant is not the accomplishments themselves, but the true motivation behind them."

McCain voted against MLK Day

McCain as a young congressman in 1983 voted against a federal holiday for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Most Republicans in the House voted for the holiday, though all three Arizona House Republicans were opposed. Reps. ####### Cheney, R-Wyoming, and Newt Gingrich, R-Georgia, voted for the holiday.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Does our first President and leader in a victorious independence, George Washington, .. Have a National Holiday?

How about the Man who Penned a large part of our founding Documents (as well as serving as President) have such a Holiday?

How about the President who lead the Nation into and through th Civil war.. which Preserved the Union and culminated in his assassination, what National holiday does he get?

All these great men are now lumped into one "Presidents day".

If this, is acceptable perhaps this same "practical" means should be in the future by converting Kings holiday, into "Great Citizens Day" and Congress can add worthy citizens who, along with King we can pay tribute on this day?

King is clearly deserving a holiday... Just not a national=holiday as none of these other Great Americans have one ... without whom, Kings dreams would have been merely that.

Naturally, in todays climate of PC pressure, a politician would commit political-suicide to not vote for such a holiday, but such are the times in which we live.

Fairness for all... favor for none.

I don't believe in god, and the remark wasn't addressed to MLK.

No mail yesterday, and practically all governmental offices were closed, everybody else had to go to work, so not much of a holiday unless you work for the government.

Actually Johnson and Nixon did a lot more for the blacks than King, during WW II, blacks were used as cooks and in supply, but thanks to these two great men, they were put on the front lines during the VN war.

And I have no reverence for Allah ... but I would not use his name is such a way, especially in a public place where others who might be offended in this way, are certain to hear it.

BUt it's a free country my friend (at least for now).

Use a drill.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
