I have been trying to collect together all the documents on the package 3 checklist but am having real problems getting hold of a certified copy of my certifcate from my former marriage as I was married in St Lucia. The court kept the original I had when I was divorced and I only have a photocopy. I have the certified copy of my divorce decree, does anyone know if I need the marriage certificate as well for the interview?

You mean the marriage certificate to the ex, right? Not the divorce decree? Don't know why that form says it except maybe if it explains a name change for a woman from what her birth certificate says. My fiance, husband now, did not have to show his first marriage certificate at the embassy in London.

I know I took my former marriage certificate to the interview (just in case) - In agree with previous poster - for a woman I think it simply covers the name changes - I would take it just in case - if you dont need it all fine and well but if for some reason you got asked for it and you didnt have it you would be kicking yourself .... better to be safe than sorry. I cant remember if I was asked for it but I know I took it.

Good Luck

I got a certified copy simply because I had no other copy - as you already know the original is taken from you when you divorce - others may be able to chip in if they were able to get by with a ordinary copy

Thanks for clarifying that. I will just have to hope that I manage to make some progress with the registry people in St Lucia.

Thanks for the suggestion:) I had not thought of that so I rang the court. They cannot issue a court certified copy only a photocopy, however the person I spoke to said that if I request it in my letter they will provide a covering note to that effect. Hopefully thephotocopy and the covering note together will suffice for a plan B if the certificate does not arrive from St Lucia.

Why would you need to prove your former marriage? I do not think anyone would pay to get a divorce if they were not previously married. I was married in Jamaica to my ex and divorced in New York and I was not even asked for a copy of my marriage license to prove my marriage when I started my divorce preoceedings because as I stated no one would be getting a divorce if they were not married. A copy of the divorce decree is what USCIS need as proof of a dissolution of a former marriage. The only marriage certificate that is needed is the current marriage as proof of relationship to petitioner (spouse). Hope this makes sense to you. Have a great day.

I believe someone mentioned this earlier but I think they are normally requested so they can follow the trail of name changes.
