(KUWAIT CITY) — The Saudi king said Monday his country will donate $1 billion to help rebuild the Gaza Strip after the devastating Israeli offensive and told Israel that an Arab initiative offering peace will not remain on the table forever.

King Abdullah's comments at an Arab economic summit in Kuwait City were his first since Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas declared a fragile cease-fire to halt three weeks of violence in Gaza that killed more than 1,250 Palestinians. (See pictures of Israel's Deadly Assault on Gaza.)

"Israel has to understand that the choice between war and peace will not always stay open and that the Arab peace initiative that is on the table today will not stay on the table," said Abdullah during a speech.

The initiative, which was first proposed by Saudi Arabia in 2002 and relaunched in March 2007, offers Israel collective Arab recognition in exchange for Israeli withdrawal from territory it occupied in the 1967 war, the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital and a just solution for the problem of Palestinian refugees.

1 billions is a nice start... for comparison the new Yankee stadium was about 1.3 billion... So what does a billion really get you?

USA spent roughly 50 BIllion and Europe donated more than 13 billion after WWII to rebuild Western Europe as part of the Marshall Plan...

That is not taking into account inflation...

That can get you all the major sports teams and perhaps a Nascar track too

You would think this ####### could cough up more than a measly $1 billion after $150 bbl. oil in 2008. Even at $35 the kingdom is swimming in cash.

I guess he hates Muslims.

I think this is less about money than it is about a warning of support from other Arabs. Good that a war mongering president is leaving office, bad that a new president may have to posture more aggressively than would a tenured one. I see the Doomsday Clock getting much closer to Midnight.

Warning of support? What support? I don't see the Kingdom offering to take in the refugees. At least I haven't heard of it.

Maybe you missed this part of the article, "...told Israel that an Arab initiative offering peace will not remain on the table forever."

I can see how you'd miss that part, it was in the first sentence.

Why not take in all these poor unfortunate refugees and get them out of the line of fire caused by these azzholes that use them as a shield while hurling missles at Israel?

But I guess I missed that part.

In the absence of that I must assume they are mere pawns in this game. Who cares if they die when Saudi Arabia has so much money to rescue them and are fellow Arabs and Muslims. If they won't help them, who will?
