Typical K-1 request, my case got approved, I got the envelope from the embassy, with all the forms needed.

There is an I-134 included.

My fiancee is waiting in the US, we're both young (but technically adults) and we met when I was studying in the US.

- I thought the "Affidavit of Support" could be filed by me or one of my parents - but the form demands a US citizen (?).

- Can't I just show money in the bank? Me or my fiancee both don't have a stable work history (ironically, because of traveling to see each other and complications to wait for the K1). Do I really need to hit bottom and find an american "daddy" to give bank statements to prove that I can marry my fiancee and stay in the US? I thought I had already lowered my dignity quite enough for this government.

It doesn't make sense that the "sponsor" has to be american. When I went to study, I had to pay around $50k of tuition for a regular community college, and now they ask for proof that I will not be a "burden"? This is straight out of a monty python sketch :)

you could show ur money in the bank if u want but its not going to do u any good.

if u trust ur fiance so much , u could trasfer ur money to her but thats a risky move.

have ur fiance to find a co-sponser and fill out Affidavit of support.

she (USC) has to do it coz that how it works.

Thanks for the reply!

How much money does she (my fiancee) need to have in the bank to convince them?

Even if she has the money, the Affidavit still has to be filed? Can she be my affidavit sponsor? Are a couple tens of thousands of dollars in the bank enough, or do we need to always show work history? :/

You have only begun to lower your dignity, there is MUCH more to come. Not only do you need to find a US citizen "daddy" ...your assets and bank accounts count for nothing at this point. You could be the sole heir to the Onassis empire and it wouldn't be enough to get you an approved visa.

The I-134 needs to be filled out by your US citizen fiancee AND a US citizen co-sponsor, if your fiancee cannot document enough income to support you. After you arrive you will have to "adjust status" and file the more complex I-864 support document which will also need to be done by your (then) US citizen husband AND (possibly) a US citizen co-sponsor. HOWEVER, on the I-864 you CAN include your assets, bank aacounts, etc. The good news is the I-864 absolves the original co-sponsor of his obligation. So, if your assets would allow you and your future husband to qualify on your own, your co-sponsor for the interview has little to worry about in terms of future obligations.

I agree. The easiest route is for the US Citizen to get a co-sponsor for now, and possibly be able to file without it when you go for Adjustment of Status. Do you know what the requirements are?

The non-productive aside: I suspect the sponsor has to be an American so that the government can more-easily reclaim funds from the sponsor, if need be. The US government is merely looking out for its citizens, so it tries to assure that immigrants and visitors won't become public charges (ie - "burden" as you put it). Even if the foreign visitor is rich, it'd still be relatively easy for that visitor to "leave the cash at home," access free healthcare (or some other public benefit), then return abroad and let taxpayers foot the bill. I'm sure you might feel like you are lowering your dignity, but please try to remember that there's valid reasons behind it.

Best of luck to you
