Hi gals - So as you know I think I'm probably the youngest one on this site and I'm wondering if some of you "more seasoned" veterans can give me some advice. I'm graduating in August and have sent out like 45 resumes, most of them to the NYC/DC area. I've gotten one phone interview since I started sending with a few more closing dates coming up soon. I'm really hoping something comes through but I don't want to wait until I get something to have to scurry to find an apartment and worry about moving.

Our idea is that we will move to the NYC area, my husband has a job ready when we get there that pays pretty decent. Do you think that it makes sense to start looking and possibly sign for an apartment before I secure a job? If he's working, and I don't get something right away in my field I could always pick up something else out there until I get my "dream" job. Or do you think we shouldn't chance such a big move and life change? I know it's our decision ultimately but I don't have a ton of experience with these kinds of things!

I would say it depends how much you have saved up and how well your husband's job pays. If you have enough saved up right now that you can put up at least 2 months' rent (and more likely 3 months' rent, since many apartments require first, last, and security deposit or broker's fee) and have enough to live on with just his job for a month or two while you look for work, I'd say go for it.

First of all, don't forget the NYC is one of the most expensive places in the country to live. EVERYTHING is more expensive there: rents, transportation costs, even groceries and taxes. Maybe the only thing that's cheaper is some of the restaurants.

Second of all, don't forget that it may take you several months to find the right job, or even a job that's just OK. Because you have a little one at home, you might not be able to compromise as much as some, because you'll need to have somewhere good for him to stay if both of you are at work.

Also don't forget that moving expenses can be fairly significant! I would say take a good look at your financial situation; research how much you're going to have to put out to begin with for an apartment, how much it's going to cost to move, and how it will be for you if you're not working for several months.

I really don't think there's anything wrong with moving without a job already in sight, as long as you've planned it out and made sure that you'll be able to swing it.

Good luck!

Sharon

I agree... even though I am younger than you I think... I would say if you have enough money then go for it but make sure you take all of those expenses into consideration. I personally wouldn't move to an expensive city without having job security there first unless I had a good amount of savings. Good luck.
