I have never heard anyone mention this before.

My only guess as to why they would ask for this is one of two reasons. One is that they ask for it in order to put stipulations in the marriage contract (there was recently a "North African" man in France who was awarded by a French judge, the return of the bride's dowry, for breach of contract, because she was not a virgin). My second guess would be a religious reason. There is a passage in the Quran (I can look for it later) that says an adulterer only marries and adulteress and a chaste man only marries a chaste woman, so on and so forth. Perhaps that is why they ask for it???

Not poking at you NT4H, but I'm just wondering what the religious balance is in Morocco, ie., Christian, Muslim, Jewish, etc.

Does anyone know?

Religions

Muslim 98.7%, Christian 1.1%, Jewish 0.2%

Salaam Syd,

If you are getting married in Morocco, the US citizen needs to obtain a Certificate of Marriagiblity from the US consulate. It is a very easy document to obtain, see the US consulate in Morocco website.

The Moroccan citizen has to obtain a certificat célibataire, a document stating you are not already married. I believe you obtain this document in the same city where your Carte National is issued.

All the other stuff above about paying off doctors and reconstructing virginity and killing off women who had sex before marriage, i have never heard of or witnessed in Morocco.

Good luck,

hz

I believe there is a thread here in MENA that Rajaa_Reda started about the marriage process in Morocco. Might want to look it up. She did a great job of listing the steps.

I know all of this can be confusing. Besides what the consular put on their website regarding marriage requirements it also said what is also exclusive to whatever city you are getting married in is necessary. In our city it was different and required more things.

And for the comment about family finding out, even though I was a virgin, my husband just didn't want anyone touching me. We were given one for the both of us, not just me. In addition, in his town, a lot of the younger crowd that are getting married are more liberal and do not put such an emphasis on girls being married as virgins. Just depends on the couple. It all depends on who you can trust. You'd be surprised what they do. One of my relatives used chicken's blood as proof after the wedding. LOL

Ihavequestions - You are so right. I had to explain that to many people because they got the wrong impression. Just because I am American and have a bf doesn't mean I was out there having sex. We see many couples and have many friends that are just bf and gf for the time being. That does not mean they are having sex. A lot of the younger crowds are just not ready to settle, at least in ours.

If the thrill is knowing that you (as a man) is taking the womans virginity. Well then you (the man) didn't, and no surgery is going to bring it back. So where is the thrill?

And not bleeding when you have sex the first time is not an indicator that the woman is not a virgin. An active girl, or a tampon could break the hyman, so nothing is sure. I know I didn't have bleeding the first time I had sex.

Do you know the definition of a virgin?

virgin

adj 1: being used or worked for the first time; "virgin wool"

2: in a state of sexual virginity; "pure and vestal modesty";

"a spinster or virgin lady"; "men have decreed that their

women must be pure and virginal" [syn: pure, vestal, virginal,

virtuous]

n : a person who has never had sex

Once a woman (or man for that matter) has had sexual intercourse they are no longer a virgin, and no surgery is going to reverse the fact that sexual intercourse did indeed happen. Furthermore a girl that has worn a tampon has not lost her virginity.

Is it that the definition of a virgin is different in MENA than it is in the US? It has nothing to do with the hymen. If that is the case then I, a mother of 4, could someday become a virgin again.

Exactly. It's too early in the morning for this, but I'd like to see a poll of how many women actually bled the first time they had sex, at least enough to have something to "show" for it. Bet they'd be in the minority.
