Average flour in the States is labelled "All Purpose", but I always remember buying flour in the UK and it was "Self Rising"

I found Bisto in Meijer, if you have any near you.

Yorkshires won't be the same in the States, something to do with the flour. Have read about loads of Brits having problems making them. :(

:(

i wonder what's different about the flour?

No one mentioned Roast Parsnipssssssssssssssss. Kroger sells fresh parsnips here. I have a Yorkshire pudding tray here but gave up on making them.

I have cracked the Yorkshire Pudding problem. I made possibly my best pudding ever EVER this Christmas using a (gasp!) American recipe. It was absolutely delicious and puffed up perfectly.

3/4 cup flour (do not use self-raising)

1/2 tsp salt

2 large eggs

1 cup milk (I use full-fat milk)

4 tbsp oil or drippings (I used vegetable oil because I was making a ham)

Beat flour, salt, eggs, milk together until very smooth, scraping bowl occasionally. Let stand for at least 30 mins; ideally refrigerate for up to 2 hours. Heat oven to 450F*. Measure oil/drippings into 8in cake tin (you can also use cupcake/muffin tins for mini Yorkies). Heat for 2 minutes. Pour batter into pan and bake for 20-30 minutes. Do not open door if you can help it! Serve immediately.

*It is totally possible to cook at a lower temp -- I did mine at 350F for about 30mins, then blasted it at 450 for 10 more mins and it was awesome. This is particularly useful when you are roasting something at a lower temp than 450 but need to get the pudding going at the same time.

Yeah, you can probably find Bisto. I bought some. er indoors is probably making cream gravy like you have with Chicken Fried Steak. But I don't know if they do CFS in Missouri...may be a southern favorite.

Yep, they do CFS (both a chicken and steak version) in Missouri. And I know exactly what type of "gravy" you are refering to (the same vile stuff served up as part of the repugnant biscuits & gravy dish, and don't even get me started on grits). She can make that just fine (well she's a hick, what do you expect?) but struggles with the regular stuff.

I can't make Yorkshire Pudding!!!! I fail miserably!!! They come out as these flat, heavy miserable little lumps. My mother-in-law to be sent me a pan and a recipe with pictures and instructions....and I still can't make them! Please help me, I have tried researching online in other spots.

I am wondering if I am not translating the recipe right. This is what she gave me: 4 oz. of flour, 3 eggs, whisk them together. Add 6-7 oz of milk and whisk frantically. Add some salt and pepper if you want. Preaheat the oven to 250 C and put one teaspoon of oil in the bottom of each little cup. Put the pan in the oven until the oil is smoking hot. Quickly pour the batter in and cook for 20-25 minutes and don't open the oven door. Ever! Not even to peek! So I used 1 cup of flour, the 3 eggs and 3/4 a cup of milk and put the oven at 475. Seems like a lot of eggs to me and maybe she meant small eggs and I used large because she said if the eggs were too small to use 4. I heated the oil, I did everything I thought was right.....flat.

The good news is....the wedding is still on. But it would be nice to be able to make him one of his favorite things. I'm normally a pretty good cook. Really.

'self-rAising' in the UK ;)

and the UK/Aus equivalent to 'All Purpose' flour is 'Plain'... it's also very easy to get :)

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

My yorkies always come out really well. Here is the recipe I use and it does work. Just sift the all purpose flour and make a well in the centre. Mix the eggs and milk together, add some salt and pepper and slowly whisk into the batter mixture. Leave the batter sitting at room temperature for one hour before you cook it.

Use a deep muffin pan and add a tablespoon of regular cooking oil. Heat the oven to 475F and then heat the pan for about 5-6 minutes. Have the batter ready when you take the pan out of the oven. Immediately ladle enough batter into each muffin hole to reach around half way up, and put straight back into the oven.

You won't see any action for about 15 minutes, and it will look like the yorkies are burning on top, but the top bits will fall off as the yorkies grow and then after 25 minutes you will have huge perfect yorkshire puddings !! Good luck.

vegetable oil

100ml full-fat milk

50ml sparkling water

115g all purpose flour

1/4 tsp salt

2 medium eggs, beaten

I shopped Meijers yesterday and bought some HobNobs, Chunky KitKats, and Galaxy bars

I bought some Mint Aeros and was in heaven for 32.9 seconds - the time it took me to devour the first one!

I love grits!!!

OMG, I really love to go eat out breakfast and am so disappointed if they don't serve grits.

Is something weird going on here? That post from the girl who couldn't make yorkshire pudding was a separate thread, and I replied with a link to this thread where we started on yorkies. Now that's all combined into the Sunday Roast thread. How did that happen? Magic?

I think someone merged the threats. Didn't know they could do that, but I think that's what happened. The header changed to add the Yorkshire pudding line.
