She is not covered under your uninsured portion of your policy. Uninsured/Underinsured is ONLY pertains to yourself when someone hits you that does not have adequate insurance to cover your losses.

However she is covered if you give her permission to drive your vehicle, but if they find out she has been living with you and driving your vehicle for an extended period of time without being added to the policy, they can deny any claim that you make, including if another under insured driver hits you. They could also get you for insurance fraud if you were to file a claim under these circumstances.

Also just an FYI uninsured does not cover property damage to other vehicles, so if she did hit someone you would be responsible for the damage and liability, not the insurance company. Insurance companies will look for anyway possibly not to pay out claims, so best to not give them any reasons to. It is always best to read your policy's fine print, there are a lot of exclusions in there, that they don't tell you about.

Hello Everyone,

My new wife and I live in Tennessee. She has had her Tennesse driver's license for almost 7 months now. I haven't added her to my auto policy yet. But she is still covered under the "uninsured motorists" clause of my policy.

My question is does anyone know when you add your new spouse to your auto policy, does your rates go up, maybe because she is a new driver in the states? She has been driving for 20 years, but only 7 months in the states. Her driver's record is clean, but she has a temporary license until she gets her 10 year green card next year.

Any experiences to share?

Thanks,

Be careful!

"Uninsured motorists" means the other party, when they have no insurance coverage.

Not for drivers of your own car.

So technically your wife may be arrested or ticketed when the police find out her driving without insurance.

It is up to State law.

If she can get the driving record from Thailand, it may help to keep insurance rate with clean driving record.

Most of insurance company agent just assume that people is driving since 18 years old since in U.S. it is typical.

So they just check the driving record, and it hit with clean records.

Therefore in most case, insurance rate won't go up since new additional driver has clean record.

But it can be varied from insurance agent to insurance agent.
