Wait a minute! Yesterday, you told me we only had 48 hours, and now you say we have to wait until just after Obama gets reelected/defeated, and before Christmas 2012, before the world ends? I just don't think there is enough pizza in the world to last until then!

I just made pizza for breakfast! Num Num

I have a question for the astrophysocists out there 1) How do you spell your profession and 2) When the Earth crosses the galatic eliptic in December, 2012, will we notice any change in the motion of the stars, or is that completely dependent of the motion of the Earth? Will there be any noticable change in the migration of the stars?

1.)Astrophysicist are not English majors. Question answered. If they were, then everyone would understand what they're talking about.

2.)I can tell you over a geological time scale, stars move further away. This is consistent with the theory that the Universe is

expanding based on observations obtained from the Hubble Space Telescope. Therefore, in 2012 there'll be a few difference observed in the position of the stars. No, humans are no capable of noticing the migration of the stars due to the small time scale we exist. All we can do is use though experiments to determine the future of motions.

Gee, back then, they couldn't tell the difference between a planet, star, or a galaxy system. Planets in our solar system were considered to be gods because the danced through the skies. A major occurrence or even a disruption was thought to occur if all nine planets would line up, if they could line up. Best they can do is a zigzag line, even then, nothing would happen. And because we were born at a certain time of the year, the stars would dictate our lives if you believe that.

Okay, in that vein, as we approach, then pass through the galatic eliptical plane, there should be a shift in the spectrum in the light/radiation striking the earth from shorter to longer wavelengths. This may be hardly perceptible, since the sun is far closer than any other extra-terrestial radiation source. The doppler effect known as "beats" is noticable to the human ear, even from a barely audible sound source. Is there a similar effect for light/radiation, and what effect, if any, will that have? Harmonics can be very destructive, but will the effect be hardly noticable, if notable at all?

We're not talking about the sun. But, I didn't quite understand what you're trying to say. :D

I apoligize, then, for thinking you might have a background in physics. Anyone else?

I further apologize for any misspellings, i.e. "galactic", not "galatic".

I do. However, I don't quite make the connection having a nearby sun being the source of light with the source from quasars, etc...And the thing that I thought of when you mentioned beat, I thought of pulsating stars. Stars that's releasing radiation at periodic intervals.

1) Let's see. I assume that most of the radiation striking the earth comes from the Sun. This is simply from the inverse of the square for measuring radiation versus radius.

2) There are other sources out there. The closest our those in our own galaxy. The radiation from all other objects outside the Milky Way combined has less effect on the earth than the combination of objects in our own galaxy. Assumption.

3) For objects that are approaching each other, the frequency of the radiation observed is shifted to shorter wavelengthes (blue shift), the contrary applies to objects moving apart (red shift). This is the doppler effect. Demonstrated.

4) For anyone tuning a guitar, or hearing a passing siren, there is a intermittent tone that is perceptible to the ear, that is the interference phenomenom known as "beats". The same effect is noted for EMR and makes Doppler RADAR possible. Demonstrated.

5) As the solar system passes though the most dense plane of the galaxy, the earth passes the greatest possible number of radiation sources, and the spectrum of those sources shifts from shorter to longer wavelengths, then the interference phenomenom will also be at it greatest. Assumption.

The question is, even at its greatest effect, will the phenomenon be noticable to anyone that was not able to look for it?

Due to the earth is protected by magnetic poles. It deflects alot of those light (gamma radiation, x-ray, cosmic rays, etc..) already. Nobody would be able to notice it with measuring instruments. Also, there are unaccounted matter known as dark matter that can also warp space. There's lots of strange phenomenon that an average person will not be able to notice without someone telling them. Unless they live in the Northern most part of the world.

it took 8 years to get us into this mess...dont see it taking 4 to get out of it.

There's only been global warming in the last 8 years? Somebody didn't read the article.

FACT: Global warming is a crock of sh!t.

FACT: Writing "FACT:" in front of a sentence makes the content of that sentence true.

I don't buy it. Global weather patterns are so complex that it takes supercomputers five hours to make an 8-day forecast. Furthermore, we simply lack the historical climatological data to sit around and talk about 'how the weather is supposed to be'. We've been keeping records for what, 125 years? And up until 40 years ago or so, that basically amounted to someone going outside and reading a thermometer, a barometer, and maybe an anemometer.

And I don't buy that ice core sample #######, either. We're now simply in an interglacial period, and someday, we'll again be under 2 miles of ice. It's happened 3 times in the past 100,000 years, it's gonna take more than some Hummer exhaust to stop it from happening again.
