I see that you are in Southern California. I would be a bit leery of Craigslist. It is a great site if you want to find second hand furniture. But if you're looking for employment, you are generally going to find listings from companies that are smaller. There are also bogus listings from time to time. I would stick with Monster.com or Careerbuilder.com. The job market in Southern California is fierce. It is very competitive and will take a bit longer than most places. You may even have to take a job that you don't like, or is below your qualifications to get a foot in the door.

I have never felt this. I figured that some employers didn't want to hire me because of my status, but there were many willing to do so. I also think being Canadian wasn't looked at as foreign as someone who might have English as a second language ...

I had one interview and the guy said to me they weren't sure they would call me in because they didn't know if I'd be able to speak English. He though ALL of Canada was French speaking.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

Believe me, I'm applying for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING I can! I've applied for the most medial jobs and not even a phone call. I have TONS of computer software knowledge...that is my specialty...I have lots of different employment experience so I can fit into almost any job...

The discrimination thing: I have emails from the gal that was doing the initial interviewing documenting that the only question her manager had was about my legal status...they were ready to set up testing for me then NOTHING! I'm deflated and disappointed in the US...I spoke to a lawyer the other day, he referred me to a guy that specializes in this stuff, I have yet to call him as I'm just plain disgusted...

I have had lots of interviews for different positions, I am not a salesperson by any means, I am who I am and I am very good at many things, just waiting for the right employer to realize that I can wear many hats at any company (cost effectiveness)...this point may pay off as I had a good initial interview as a Receptionist at a law firm...can't believe after all these years I'd be applying for a Receptionist position! ugh! been there and done that over 20 years ago! she liked the fact that I'm huge into Excel and have experienced the immigration process as well as can fix computers (hardware or software)...we'll see what happens as I've now applied for over 200 jobs!

Thanks everyone for your input! Good luck to everyone!

Hey watch that, I am Canadian but English IS my second language :P

PWND!!!

Sorry Mephys....I should have re-phrased that!! I meant, Being Canadian didn't seem as big of a deal as it might be if you are from a country where English is not predominant, you need ESL classes OR your qualifications were not on par with american standards.

You know I love the French..come on!

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

.this point may pay off as I had a good initial interview as a Receptionist at a law firm...can't believe after all these years I'd be applying for a Receptionist position! ugh! been there and done that over 20 years ago!

Jen, unfortunately when you move countries this is what often happens..happens to me. I began working for the government at 16 years old in transportation making $20/hr. Almost 10 years later, with that experience and my BA, I thought I would get a decent job but I had to work as a receptionist at a general contracting company for almost a year before I got my job now.

I'm working as a receptionist now making less money today than I made back in 1986 at my first office job. Top that! :P

Good luck Jen, I hope you get your foot in the door somewhere soon.

Question for you - have you had anyone look at your resume to modify it for the U.S. market?
