What the hell does "I reckon" mean? Is it a yes, probably, or maybe?

Yes.

And I've noticed that for some reason Canadians don't use this word very often, but Americans and Brits do, as do other Commonwealthers. My English family (Father, Aunts, Grandmother, cousins etc...) all use "reckon", but for some reason, I just never could figure out how to stick it in a sentence.

"over yonder" however seems to be strictly an American thing. Maybe even just in the South, I dunno.

Speaking of language and the British, my great-grandmother (born in 1899) was from England. She came over to the U.S. before she hit her teens.

She forced herself to drop her accent since kids were making fun of her and making her life a living hell while at school. I think it's sad she felt she has to do that. While I prefer many of the American spellings and sayings to the British ones, I don't think changing everything about the way you speak is a necessity.

My dad came to Canada from Glasgow when he was 15. There after he developed a terrible stutter because his accent was so thick, not only did he get made fun of, but he found it really hard to "slow down" his language.

When he had to stand up in front of the class, his accent was so hard to understand because of how fast he spoke, it ruined his self esteem.

My dad still has trouble once and awhile with his "a"s and other letters but has learned to slow down his speech after years of meetings and presentations. It was a really big thing to overcome and something I can say I'm very proud of.

It was funny at dinner the other night with krikit and Carla. Gene's niece was there with her boyfriend (Brad) and I said, to the American's - so what do you guys think, do we sound like Canadians?

Brad answered that the only one he thought sounded remotely Canadian was my Husband (the Australian). Then again Brad thought he had lost his NY accent - not!

And.... what the heck?!!! I can't believe Brad thought your husband was the only Canadian-sounding person at the table! He was obviously Australian. That was too funny. And, no. Brad hadn't lost his Noo Yawk accent at all. No sir, indeedy.

My wife says "ashfault." I never realized this. On the other hand, who has a ton of discussions about pavement?

The first time my wife and I realized we pronounce some words differently was when "foyer" came up. She stopped mid-conversation and asked me to repeat it. I said "foy-yer." She said "foy-yay."

This got interesting since she said it sounds "uneducated" to pronounce the word as "foy-yer." Likewise, I said it sounds "pretentious and stuck up" to say "foy-yay." We weren't calling each other that, but reflecting on how American and Canadian English can be so similar yet so different.
