I also LOVE to drive in Canada as it seems like I get everywhere so much faster than I thought I would. When I see the distance signs, my mind always thinks miles and calculates ETA accordingly, but a while later I realize I had a brain fart and then I get there a lot faster than I thought I would! :lol:

My husband went through the same thing the first time he drove to my house! After he crossed the border he saw a sign saying 70kms to where I lived and thought he had at least another hour's drive. :lol:

Oh #######, so just when I think I got it, I'm wrong again. :bonk: So one can be pissed as in mad, one can be pissed as in drunk, and one can be pissing away time. Sheesh. Of course, there's always another alternate meaning that involves the restroom/bathroom/washroom. :lol:

pissed = angry

pissed = drunk

pissing the night away = wasting time

full of piss and vinegar = vivacious, lively

pissing and whining = complaining

pissing = bathroom/washroom activity

No wonder english is such a hard language to learn. :lol:

You forgot Pissing= Raining!!!

Taking the piss (also taking the mick) = making fun.

I say Runners, Ashphault and "we got pissed up".

I was watching my brother play hockey in PA yesterday and the guy came down with hot dogs, popcorn and pop and I said "Ill have a hot dog and a pop please.."

He hands me popcorn and a hot dog.

I said, no..a pop.

He and every one else beside me looking at ####### is wrong with me.

I blurt out "SODA!"

Every one starts to laugh....taking the piss :(

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

In regards to the English language... why do we have the letter "C"? And don't tell me it's for "cookie." :P

It seems to me that "C" does the job of either "S" or "K". So "C" is redundant in a way. It's confusing, too. A word that has a "C" in it might be pronounced in a soft or hard way. That can't make those words easy to learn.

Sure, English is an amalgamation of many different languages, but... it still doesn't make sense. Why make the language more difficult than it needs to be? :unsure:

To avoid the pop vs. soda issue, I specifically say "can I please have a diet coke" or "root beer" I make it very specific so not to confuse anyone!

I was very pleased to discover that they say pop down here in the south, too. Though I have been looked at funny when I've said it up north.

I have never heard anyone here in North Carolina refer to it as pop. Its either coke, or just plain drink, sometimes soda. No matter what they want.

We have the letter C because the Romans made up the alphabet and they use C all the time. Then some muckity muck decided that the Germanic language that we now call English could well be served by using the Roman alphabet. :P

Think English is difficult? Try some of the Celtic languages! :o

True that. In university I took several courses in middle English and it was incredibly hard to even begin to sound out the words. It was like an entirely different language.

I've often heard people tell me that English is the hardest language in the world to learn because of it's different uses of sounds and words such as (their, there, they're, etc) But then I have also heard that it is one of the easiest....but this leads me to believe it may be easy to pick up as a conversational language and not in all it's proper formalities.

I think many people who use English as a second language, especially here in the US, have it as strictly a conversational based language. My husband runs a restaurant and his whole staff is pretty much Mexican. They can sort of speak English but because they have picked it up from hearing it, they do not have any formal understanding of it.

I have always been interested in linguistics. I find it fascinating. I find regional slang also completely amazing.

I was going to mention this one! My fiance laughs at me every time I say I need to get a pop, and the dude behind the counter at jack in the box looked at me like I was an alien when I asked for a medium sized pop (cuz they had a fountain so I didn't have to specify which kind. I've also caught them saying things like "I'm going to get a coke" and they come back with like...7-up or something. *shrug*

I too say ashfault. And my goodness you should have seen the look when I said I had to goto the store to get a bag of milk...my god. Milk....in bags!?!??! THE INSANITY lol. I'm sure theres a few others but I can't think of them atm, I'll let you know if I can remember.
