Affidavit of Support

As both my wife and I work in the UK, I believe I'm correct in saying that our income cannot be used to show sufficient support, we will have to use assets.

That is not a problem we have a house in London which will more than cover the required amount. The problem is proving we own it. The building society have the deeds and will not release them until the mortgage is paid, which we need to sell the house to do.

Has anyone used their house as an asset of support at the London Embassy, and/or knows what documentation they will ask to see to prove we own it. We were thinking of this years annual mortgage statement.

Only just filed the I-130, but using the time now to prepare all the documents for the next stage.

Who is the USC ?.. when dealing with income it is theirs that they consider.. and theirs alone. You can only count this if it will continue once you reside in the US. (i.e If it is a US based income)

As for the assets, Can you not get the land registry document ?, also I have heard of people getting price evaluations of their house to show price estimates. What about details of mortgage payments. - However I am unsure of what info the Embassy will want.. these are just Suggestions...

I thought that you were allowed a copy of the Deeds if you go to the bank (just not the original).. could be wrong though.. Good luck !

I qualified on assets, tho not in London. I did not need the deed & haven't heard of anyone who has.

I *did* use a current property tax statement to show the 'market value' (reality was much higher, but this method was easier from overseas) and the mortgage statement to show the outstanding debt. The equity can be used as an asset.

If you plan on selling up, you could get an estate agent's valuation, usually done as a courtesy, as one way to value the house. If your appraisal was sufficiently high, you could use that as additional evidence.

I was able to pull things together fairly quickly---don't assume it'll take forever.

Thanks that was just the information I was looking for. Will use the mortgage statement and an estate agent valuation, we will be selling any way. Which it was I was hoping because as you say that should take too long.

This is what we'll be doing as well. The Embassy in Montreal confirmed a few weeks ago that an appraisal paired with a mortgage statement would be sufficient to prove assets, although the agent I spoke with said it would be helpful to show that it's already on the market, to help with the domicile question. But that's an entirely different issue...
